Did I get a bad greco? I recently recieved a GRECO MST Mk IV FLAT GRIND from CQC Knives. There are machine marks on the spine near the four notches that are cut for your thumb, the hole that was drilled in the finger guard was not drilled cleanly and resembles a ragged circle, the cut out at the but of the blade is very rough and should have been filed, there is a scratch in one of the slabs of micarta on the handle, the edge grind is far from simetrical, and in more than one places on the edges of the knife handle there is what appears to be porosity that had to occur when the steel was forged. All in all I really like the way this knife looks and feels in my hand. This is my first custom knife and I"m a little dissapointed. Did I get a bad greco, or is this just what a $50 custom knife looks like?
 Oh, yeah, I love the nice leather sheath that it came with, but I would like to get a nice kydex or concealex IWB sheath. Does anyone know of a source for such a thing that I wouldn't have to ship my knife to?

MW740, I bought one of these myself. I love mine. These are not really custom knives. Semi -custom? Remember this knife was priced less than most similarly sized production knives from the USA, Japan or Europe. You would have to spend some multiple of what you did before you can expect excellent fit and finish in a custom knife.
I wish I could buy some more $50.00 semi-custom knives but Greco is the only person in the world that offers these. What a steal (steel?).
:D

averageguy- I'm happy with the knife if all of them are like this, I just wanted to make sure that I didn't get one that was unusually rough. The fact that it is not a perfectly clean knife will just allow my to put it to some heavy use without worrying about it. Don't get me wrong, I think that this is one bad a** functional knife.

If you are unsatisfied with your knife you can contact them for an Exchange, they have great customer service, just send it beck with a letter explaining what you don’t like about it and they will fix it for you, they’ll even replace it if you abuse it;) call them first though.

Ohh could you post a picture? so we can see if its normal or just a lemon?

Well, I bought a Greco Green River when they had the big sale last June. I was slightly disappointed because the blade was visibly bent to the left. In all other respects the knife is fine and does a great job. It was good enough for $50 that I wasn't cheesed off enough to send it back. Plus, like you said, it just gives you the green light to beat the hell out of it without any guilt.

As a side note, I now see on the CQC site that they are selling seconds that have uneven grinds or blades that are minutely bent from heat treating. At the time of the big sale there were a few other posts on this forum mentioning uneven grinds/bent blades on the knives people received. So people were getting knives that were, by Greco's own definition, seconds. Make of this what you will...

Apparently these seconds were sell outs at $75.00 apiece.
With those flat grind models at $50.00 I can only assume that CQC is operating as a non profit entity.

My MST IV didn't have a good edge before, so I sent it back in to Mr. Greco and he fixed it all up.
The knives aren't really custom, but the process of making the knives is a one man job. The hole on the tang is not a perfect circle, there are some blemishes on the unimportant areas of the blade, and the false edge isn't grind evenly, but for 50 bucks I think it's a great beater and I would not do any better myself if I try to fix the blemishes anyways.
I'm pretty sure Mr. Greco would fix up your blade if you sent it in and tell him what the problem is.

I recently received a warranty replacement and the quality IMHO has taken a major nose dive unfortunately. The scales are no longer flush with the tang and the blade finish is nowhere as nice as the "G1" that he used to use.

In the end, I opted for a refund from CQC - they are great guys to deal with in any case, but I note that "you get what you pay for" is a universal law!
