I had been looking at some green agate sharpening stones on the big river. They all claim to be about 10,000 grit. Has anyone had any experience with them? Green agate finishing stones are new to me.

If they are the stone I am thinking of, they are cool-looking, Chinese, and pretty much useless for any sharpening activity.

I tried a small one on a razor and nothing at all happened to the edge.

Buy a black or translucent Ark from Dan’s for a proven reliable high grit equivalent finisher natural stone.

The reason I am piping up is I too have very recently wondered about these stones for basic basic high carbon .
I like to look at them but had decided not to buy .
Need to pine a while longer .

Any way the question is : what steel do you want to sharpen on it ? (or encourage to be the minutest amount more sharp , maybe )

Here is an ancient post of mine having to do with fine natural stones like this .

My experience is , even with A2 , which I have come to learn is pretty tame stuff as far as hard blade alloys goes , it is too "tough / hard for some natural stones .
Here is an image of how the A2 burnished the stone rather than the stone abrading or burnishing the blade edge : See that shiny spot ? Most of the stone was like that right after but could not capture the extent in one photo .
Here is a link to the whole story .
Better alloys demand more engineered stones ; at least for the fine grits .

They are beautiful, and they would make some nice chess pieces, but I tried one and found it way too smooth for any use I might have. It felt and acted like glass. A black Ark is probably going to be more useful for most folks.

A few sheets of lapping film and a sheet of glass would also be a much better option for polishing.

I ordered translucent and black pocket stones. The black one shows up tomorrow and I've been playing with the other one today. Judging by the cardboard I broke down, the stitches I eventually need will be glorious, ha ha
