I'm planning to buy a Green Beret next month, and have handled a few of them, but I was looking on peoples opinions on the 7 vs the 5.5 inch. While I'll probably be heading back to the desert in a few months, I'm an AF guy so unless something goes very wrong, I shouldn't have to worry about much hand-to-hand combat. Planning for it to be more of a whatever/survival type knife, and was debating if the 7" was a bit to long to be convienent in the outdoors. I know some people like a large survival blade, but is the 7" thick/heavy enough to be used as a good chopper? Thanks.

Dave

I'm certanly not "Mr. Outdoors/Tactical" but the new 7" GB I just got, is one well mfg'd knife that will surely chop, cut, dice sticks, logs or whatever you ask it to do. The sheath very well executed as well.

I use a 9 inch Jeroboam II when I am in the woods and it is a great chopper. 7 inches is definately a great size!

I wouldn't use the Green Beret as a chopper as it's not designed for that and might suffer some damage. LIght work should be no problem(rope, small sticks, etc....)
If you're looking for a good overall utilitarian blade with some 'survival' aspects I think the 5.5 inch will suit you fine.
I have the 7 inch and while I like it very much it's a bit overstated for every day garrison carry/use.

I would go for the 7 inch one I have one and it is one heavy duty knife. Great sheath also. I beleive my friend told that the Chris Reeves video shows the knife in chopping use. Also wishing you the best my friend.

I know that many of the REMFs are looking down on the battle blades over there. If I were not in a front line unit I would go with the 5.5 and even then I would carry it “low profile”. Best of luck to you over there and watch your ass.

I'm not in the military and don't know exactly what you will encounter, but I'd choose the 5.5".

For me in my woods walking, even this is larger than I want. I really don't like a FB over 4". For EDC of a FB (for me as a civilian), I like a knife with about 2.5" blade and not over 6" overall.

For your duty, I would certainly thinkthe smaller Green Beret will do the job. I'm sure the Green Beret will serve you well as you serve the country.

Best of luck!

Didn't think of this. Might be better off with the 5.5.

Thanks for everyone's advice. Yeah, I always thought while wandering around base a large folder (4" or so) was enough for me, but since I'll probably be flying over the desert more then walking it this time I figured I could toss something in my flight bag for a bad day. And then save it for the woods later on. :) Thanks for everyone's help....

I would go for the 5.5 myself if you are going to be getting into cars and helocopters a lot. It will look better and hangup less as well. My friend wants a CR for his backwoods sledding knife and he chose the NR over the GB because of the better handle and no serrations as well as a better sheath.
