i was just wondering who out there has used there green beret knife(chris reeve) for camping and how well do you like its practicality. im going on a camping trip for labor day weekend and wanted to here your input

You know I have never used or handled one. I can say the C.R. makes excellent knives, and I'm sure it would work.

I'm not into that style of knife preferring a much smaller fixed blade like the Fallkniven F1, and let my Wetterlings axe do the heavy work.

The GB is a great knife. For camping I'd suggest the 5.5". I have the 7" and it rarely gets used.

My friend has the Neal Roberts knife which is like the GB with an improved handle(less sharp edges) and a recurve blade, I love the knife and it sold me on Chris Reeve knives but it is a fighting knife that in a pinch can be used as a camp knife. It is supremely well balanced for a fighter but the weight is to far back to be much of a chopper and S30V is not what I would pick for a camp knife steel although it's perfect for a SEAL. I would prefer something like the K-bar birds head bowie which is much cheaper than the GB anyway for camping and the GB or SEAL knife for a serious combat knife.

I'm sure the Green Beret would work, although I've never used mine for camping. I would prefer something flat ground, or more of a chopper. My personal favorite is the Ontario Survival Bowie (10" blade). The RAT-7 and Ranger RD series make good camp knives as well. If you are taking an axe or machete along, then a smaller wood craft type knife might be better, like Bark River Bravo-1 or Cold Steel Master Hunter. Just my opinion. There are lots of good options out there that I would choose over the Chris Reeve. Most are less expensive, too.

I would suggest this guy.

I like the blade shape much more on this and the handle is very comfortable.
I handled one of the Pacifics at the Blade Show. I agree. I especially like the feel of the handle. That would be a "Cadillac" camp knife for sure. Of course, if all he has for this weekend is the Green Beret, then take it and let us all know how it worked out. Its not like it is going to break.
