"Green Beret" or "Yarborough"

Why does the "Knifeart" ad in "Tactical Knives" magazine continue to advertise the CRK Green Beret knife as the Yarborough? The Yarborough is only available to past and current "tabbed" Special Forces soldiers by presentation or through the JFKSWC bookstore. The "Green Beret" is available to anyone with $299 plus shipping. Knifeart does not sell the Yarborough. It can only sell the Green Beret.

Haven't you noticed....we're being overrun by a creeping plague of disregard for spelling and correct English usage? Correct terminology, as applied to products in the world of advertising, certainly falls in there somewhere!

Ain't that the truth!? :D

Larry S., you're absolutely right. I work in R&D and am tired of marketing asking me to test our product against our competitors until I "find" (read "create") enough favorable data that will allow them to make a rediculous claim!

I guess my former career (retired Army) has left me with the idea that there is a right way and a wrong way. My wife says I have no "middle of the road." ...and I'm not appologizing to anyone for it!

KnifeArt, I hope CRK spanks you good! Although Chris must have seen KnifeArt's ad in "Tactical Knives" since it is one page before his. Get'em, Chris!

Bruce - thanks for the heads-up - we had not noticed that KnifeArt was advertising the Green Beret as the Yarborough. I'll be calling them tomorrow!

And you are absolutely correct that the Yarborough is not available for sale to anyone other than certified SF personnel. The conditions of sale that are described in the orders from USASOC are very specific - one time only individual purchase by those meeting USASOC requirements. The knife cannot be purchased by family members or estates, nor can another Yarborough be purchased by a SF member who received one at graduation. The Yarborough cannot be resold (i.e. to a collector).

Correct terminology is everything! You can be sure that we are very specific about the record keeping and destination of Yarboroughs.

Anne, you're very welcome and my pleasure.

My wife claims I "tilt at windmills" and try to change the unchangeable. I'm going to show her this thread.

Now, a new question for CRK or anyone else. My son-in-law's brother is an SF Captain (19th SF Group) who recently returned from Afghanistan. He graduated from the Qualification course before the "Yarborough" was available. While "in country" I asked him if he was aware of the Yarborough. He said he was but had not seen one on any trooper he was serving with. He said that those who owned them had left them home for safekeeping since they were a "one time" acquisition and could not be replaced (obviously they could purchase a "Green Beret" anytime they wanted). I offered him my "Green Beret" but he said he hadn't used up the first knife I gave him (a Mad Dog ATAK Hunter).

Now to the question. Are SF troopers taking their Yarborough's to the desert with them? If not, are they purchasing the "Green Beret" instead, or taking something else?

Bruce,

One of my brother firefighters was deployed with the 20 SFG in Afghanistan as a sniper but never made it to his Q course before he deployed. Before he left my fellow firefighters and I chipped in and got him a Green Beret. When we presented him with it at his "Stay Safe Over In The Armpit Of Hell" Party he was flabbergasted. He carried that SOB for 14 months in country. And it performed flawlessly.

The Green Beret is a true soldiers knife. The Yarborough is for those who have proven to be true soldiers.

K.V.C., good to know. I figured few SF troopers would take their Yarboroughs with them because of the sentimental value. However, in my opinion, it is a very worthy combat knife, as evidenced by the fact that I bought a "GB" even though I only had a few months left before military retirement.

I really don't know how many Yarboroughs are actually being used. Probably the majority of them are being kept as heirlooms, but I have heard some second hand stories of them being used in action. Word back from SF guys is not plentiful - they are not called the Quiet Professionals for nothing!! I do know that at a group, they are delightedwith the whole Yarborough/Green Beret project.

As far as Green Beret knives are concerned, I am pretty sure that there is a significant number of them in the middle east right now and the feedback we're getting is nothing but good!
