Green felt lining? Can it be bad for knives? >>

I read something about green felt causing damage to metal? Do I have this right? Anybody remember the concept of that thread?
The storage box I just bought (Gerstner-like) has the green felt lined drawers. Can this stuff actually be damaging?

I've had several of mine in a similar chest with the green felt for about 2 years now, no sign of trouble yet. I think it's the real cheapos where you have to be careful.

Way back in the recesses of my mind I seem to remember a thread about this, where someone said that the glue used on felt in cheap boxes could deteriorate knife condition over time. Was it Golok, Gollnick? I forget. Senility is hell.

Felt gives off hydrogen sulphide which will tarnish silver. Sometimes a specially treated felt liner is used in drawers that will prevent tarnishing silver.

I'm not sure about the metal, but one of Gollnick's posts mentioned seeing a balisong with inserts (I think they were ivory) that were stained green from the felt that the storage drawer was lined with.

That's what I'm thinking. It may have been one of those smart guys with a name that starts with a "g". In any event, perhaps it's the glue I read about?

...or that could have been it. Ahhh, I can't remember.

Thanks for your help so far guys.

I have a 15 year old Gerstner that I have had since new and it lives in my unheated garage. It is full of non stainless steel items and so far no problems.

I've only ever heard of ivory being bothered by felt. It will tarnish it over time. Sealed woods and metals are ok. The felt is there to keep the moisture under control (or so they say) - that's why Gerstner uses it.
