i'd like to be able to prevent this phenomenon without having to lacquer the brass.. thanx in advance for the help.

The acids used to tan the leather might be causing this. Heavy oiling might help.

oiling the leather, i'm assuming you mean - or oiling the brass? i know the question's dumb, but bear with me.

The leather. You won't be able to keep oil on the brass. Any good leather oil should work. NOT regular petrol oil! Luck, fella.

Use Ballistol on the knife and the sheath. Ballistol will clean that green gunk off as well as keep it from coming back if you treat the sheath with it too.

I recomend using flitz on the brass and not storing your knife in it's sheath unless your carrying it.Some guys line the area where the bolsters touch with velvet, doe skin or chamois befor they sew the sheath up.

keep both dry
and as said, don't store the knife in the sheath.
oil may loosen up the leather so you could have a bad fit later
and soften it to much.if you do use oil as John said be sure it's for
water proofing not softening.
as far as brass goes use a good brass polish
it is a high maintenance metal. 2 more cents:)
