I've just become active in purchasing knives, and after much research (as in reading random stuff online for literally hours on end until I got here), I've come down to three possibilities: an Al Mar Shiva, a Fallkniven Thor, and a Busse Fat Fusion Battle Mistress. After a bit of contemplation, I decided on the third option. I'm just looking for some input, hopefully a little advice, and perhaps other possible options I haven't come across yet, since I'm so new to this all.

I decided that my first serious knife purchase will be the FFBM (look at me, using the acronym lingo already... haha) because it seems like an interesting knife (INFI and all), and there seems to be a nice positive online community around the Busse family of knives, which I consider an encouraging reflection of the knives' quality. My real question is, should I perhaps begin with a less expensive or lower-end knife and work my way up, and if so, what knives should I start with instead? I'm also looking for links to quality production knife makers, as I'm looking to learn as much as I can, and since my budget doesn't allow for any real custom knives right now.

-Thanks for reading

Go with the FFFFFBM (Flat Fat Funky Fresh Fusion Battle Mistress). They will only go up in price. Anything less would be a shame, unless it was a Swamp Rat or Scrap Yard. Nothing but Busse right now for me

why not start with the ffbm? i see no reason to "work your way" into it. if you like it, buy it. you wont be sorry. they make great choppers, camp knives, etc. infi is pretty easy to sharpen and maintain, even for a novice (like me).

if you can afford it, get the mistress. if money is an issue, look into the swamprat or scrapyard line, there are many on the exchange right now.

as far as other quality makers, are you interested in customs or productions?

customs: greg lightfoot, peter marzitelli, tom mayo, off the top of my head.

productions (least to more pricey): benchmade, fallkniven, emerson, chris reeve, strider, randall.

cant really go wrong with any of the above.

what i like about busse:

variety of style and price, infi steel, the busse crew (especially amy), the forum community.

You might want to wait for the anniversary Steel Heart 1.

It's a more general use knife and you will be able to order one instead of wearing out your f5 button at the Busse Company Store waiting for more stock to be added.

It's going to be a classic.

The FFBM is great but it's the type of knife that you may leave behind when you are trying to travel light.

Yup, you're here, and here is where you'll stay. Grab a drink and get comfortable. :D

I'd say get that FFBM for sure. Actually why screw around? Get yourself an FBM LE. Then go over to the Bussecombat.com site and order an SS in LE. And from here on out, whatever winds up being offered by the shop, ORDER IT. You might as well just start off on the right foot from the start. Everyone comes around to loving the satins eventually.

Looking at your other posts, it looks like you've already purchased an FBM. Grats and you will really enjoy it!

If you can afford it and it's what you want there is no reason to settle for something else.

If you settle for something else you will be disapointed in it before it even arrives at your home.

Enjoy the knife, and as said by others, get a drink and stick around.

Welcome to the Forums, you will love it here

yeah... when I read the "Teabags" story, I knew I was home...

Wait till you find out about lighter dogs.

dumdeedum, you never said what your aim was with this first knife. Will it be a user? A safe queen? Investment?

If it's to be used, what's your intended use? The FBM is an absolutely great knife--one of my favorites. But if you want an all-around user, the FBM is not the ticket. As someone here pointed out, you might want to wait around on the SH1A.

The FBM is, however, a great chopper. The best chopper I own, in fact. If you want a camp knife that can gather some serious firewood, or a hunting blade that can chop through bone, then the FBM is your best bet.

My last real experience with blades was far too long ago, when I was growing up in a tropical country. At this point, seeing as how I live in a college town now (though I go back to my adopted hometown by the foothills of North Carolina every now and then), doing the regular 9-5 (well, 10-6, actually) and all else, the only knife I use regularly (kitchen cutlery not included) is a cheap Kershaw folder for miscellaneous tasks at work and around the house. Perhaps one day they'll find more use, but at this point, any other knives I purchase will primarily be for collection and sentiment... and hopefully I don't get too hooked and invest too much in terms of monetary resources on the acquisition of Busse related items... because I'm pretty sure that some of you will easily say that you could stop buying Busses anytime you wanted, but always end up getting "just one more"

CRAP!!! I thought this might be a thread about a Green Linen LMS for sale! :grumpy:

Yeah...I'm getting desperate. It's not too obvious, is it? :o
