top -- The greeting is a social function. The blessing is a dead serious religious act. Each of the kamis apply a tika to my forehead and offer blessings. Sgt Karka applies the tika and says, "may your life be long, happy, healthy and prosperous. I pray that God hears my blessings and honors them. Bless you, Bena."

bottom -- I thank the kamis for the greetings, blessings, and fine welcome. They listen intently, probably having difficulty understanding my broken and fractured Nepali.

Khukuri FAQ

John, thanks and thanks for the call earlier.

I have so many pix I'm afraid I'll bore forumites with them but I hope not.

Anybody who thinks I'm posting too many pix feel free to comment. I'm so old, wrinkled, ugly and crippled I hate to see pix of myself but I'm part of the deal so have to post them.

Uncle Bill,

I don't think any one will think you're posting too many pix. They help give all of us a better understanding of the people who make our knives and their culture. As for you being in the pictures, our thoughts were with you & Yangdu during your trip, so of course we want to see how it went for you.

Namaste,
Mark

I don't want to post a "that was great" after every pic -- that would be boring -- but I'm enjoying all of them immensely. As far as I'm concerned you can't possibly post too many.

Besides, if anybody isn't interested, they're all in clearly titled threads; he can easily avoid them.

I don't think you look "old, wrinkled, ugly and crippled" ... just a little spaced out in the pix from the first day -- jet lag, I know, but you could be mistaken for an, um, utilizer of controlled substances in these first-day pix.

P.S. I just looked at pic 6 of this series and I see by the end of the ceremony you look more or less in your right mind ... actually, you look perfectly normal by then.

Now I think maybe it was more like highway hypnosis rather than jet lag. I get that really bad myself ... I have a friend who lives a two-hour drive away, all on superhighways ... he has learned not to let me near the coffee pot until I've been there at least ten minutes. When I get out of the car after two hours of driving on an 8-lane superhighway I lurch around like a zombie and knock over and spill everything I come near.... Fortunately it doesn't last long. While it lasts, though, you might suspect me of unauthorized self-administration of chemicals and/or herbs ... either that or you might think I had died and been resurrected by voodoo ... partially resurrected ... not very successfully....

I noticed that too { about Bura, I mean }. Anyway as far as the pix are concerned I look forward to my daily dose of HI images.

I have to add my two cents worth to what everyone else has said, Uncle Bill, and say that you could never have too many pictures. The more the better. We find them extremely informative and they add a great deal to the whole khukuri experience.

Uncle Bill,
Much as we might want to, most of us will never have the chance to visit Nepal in person. Even if we diligently search web pages, National Geographics, Discovery and Travel Channels, guidebooks and such conventional sources, your knowledge and unique personal perspective (not to mention opportunities for unusual non-touristy photos) really help round out our exposure to the land and people. I for one won't be satisfied until you've posted all 1000 pics (including the 7 so-called bad ones

). By then it should be about time for your next trip!

Many thanks for feedback, all. So far, I've received no complaints about excess pix -- in fact, just the opposite.

My scanner is grunting and groaning but it has not given up the ghost yet. I'll keep scanning and posting as time allows.

Thanks again!

Much more often than not, somebody beats me to the punch and I try not to add too many "me too"s, but on this subject, I have to say "right on!" The pix are great. This forum is about knives, but this forum is about knives and more. I can't deny being crazy any more than any of the other regulars, so I won't try.

Keep the pix coming. We all love 'em.
