Hi all,
My name is Tom, 25 yrs ago I had an "orig gov't contract" khukuri, paid maybe $20 for it, came w/ 2 small, very dull knives
My current passion is spyderco's & just ordered a couple of swamp rats
I've had some training in Kali & Arnis
I'm looking for couple of khukuri's
I want 1 for cutting down some small garbage tree's that have sprung up in the yard & 1 to have in new condition
Any help/ advice would be much appreciated
tom

Hey Tom,

Welcome.

Start here, with Dan Koster's (Pendentive's) dynamics of khukuri design, to get an over-all sense of the varieties.

http://www.himalayan-imports.com/faq/physics/Khukuri_Dynamics.html

Then consider weight and length for your personal comfort. I very much like the 15in AK for chopping, but most prefer a larger blade.

The 16.5in WWII seems very popular for a utilitarian blade.

There are many well-informed folks here. I suggest you read the "stickies" at the top of the Forum opening page, Tips, Hints, etc...and then start formulating your inquiries.

Nice to have you here.

Welcome, Tom. What is the diameter of the trees you plan on cutting and what kind are they?

You'll like these khuks.

An opportunity to sample both a villager *and* a full dress...

.

When I first came here, it was to purchase a 16.5" Ang Khola and a HI Bowie.

I now have 22 khukuris or smaller knives and seven swords from HI. This is not counting the ones that I've given away as gifts.

Just a friendly warning, Tom. :)

Cutting down some 1"-5" hackelberry, chinese elms & elms
wll prob get a small elec chainsaw for some of it, but chopping stuff is fun & my 50 yr old body could sure use the exercise
and my neighborhood has gone downhill, so being known as the crazy old guy w/ all them dogs & cuts down trees w/ big knives won't hurt my reputation any if ya know what I mean lol
I been using an old 12" x 4" sugar cane matchete, figured its time for an upgrade lol

I got around 40-50 spyderco's, too late lol, but thx
can't put a khukuri in your pocket to carry it, but I do have a lot of bare walls lol

Sounds like you'll fit right in at HK since two will certainly not be enough

Anything 15" or longer (o.a.l.) will work for 'garbage trees'.
Any tree over 3-4" diameter in quantity, and
you need something a couple of inches longer minimum for quicker/easier.
But 15" will still do the job.
Some people feel some 15" khuks' grips verge on too small.........

Given two khuks of the same o.a.-length;
heavier chops better, so the 'bigger' the style looks..........

I have one of the {"orig gov't contract" khukuri} myself
it works just fine if you keep it sharp.

But once you have an HI khuk in hand,
you'll see/feel a big difference.

The HI WWII model is closest to your 'gov't' model.

Welcome.

Sure you only want 2 khukris. We all just wanted one or two khukuris once.
Also: you might find the term "small knife" has a different meaning around this cantina than in the rest of the civilized world ;)

Welcome aboard Tom. Brian is correct ya know. Khuks are like tater chips, cain't eat just one. :p ;) :D

I'm just starting out myself with the khukris. After much humming and hawing, my choice for first khuk was an 18" WWII, which I received a couple of months ago.

I've been lurking here for some time now...I started out last year sometime looking for a parang because that's what Wiseman recommends in his book, but I couldn't find a suitable one. I considered the Wiseman survival tool, but thought it was a tad too expensive and radical for what I was after. I also found Blackjack knives and nearly sprung for a Blackjack Kukri/Grunt combo. At the same time I found the usual run of sites claiming to sell "real" khukris that looked like crap. Then I came across HI and decided that a REAL real khukri was the way to go. The rest, as they say is history.

Now if only I can get my hands on a Sarge...

Should of said a couple to start off w/ huh lol
Did a lot of reading last nite on that link from kismet, geez now its gonna be a couple every paycheck lol, well it might slow down my spyderco acquisitions, sorry Sal lol, looks like its ramon noodles & baloney sandwiches again lol
now I want some large khurkis for chopping, & then some smaller ones to use as I fatigue lol, and copies of my workers just in case, and some light weight ones for training & self defense, and then some just cause they look kewl, oh and I'm a sucker for a sale, can't pass up a good deal now can we, then there's my "anything worth having is worth having a spare" philosophy and then.......
Hey, you guys won't laugh at me & call me names if I pull out my 4.5" oal spyderco cricket will ya's ?, hey it makes a gr8 money clip & my teacher showed me some real kewl hidden knife techniques for it

Welcome to the Cantina/Psycho Ward Ed!!!! :D

Congrats on the WW II.:D Just hang in and sharpen your sharkin skills, you'll get a Sarge eventually. I finally got one and have liked it from the start. It just keeps growin on you until you begin to love
it.;) :D Kinda dinky though. ;) :D (See post above.)
But it's all a feller or gal needs fer what it was designed for.

Dragun, Ed, don't overlook the village models. The first few I bought were the shiny ones; nowdays I'm spending less and enjoying it more. The unfinished handles, both horn and wood, feel much better to me.

Welcome Tom!

What you need is a Tarwar. This is the best little knife for a multitude of jobs.

As mentioned earlier, the Villagers are really quite nice, and you won't think twice about using them either.

ps. you don't have any zombies where you live do you? They require special kukris...

Hi Yvsa, spydie Military goes for $85, $92 for the black blade version, the Mannix is supposed to be pretty big too, they wanna do a fusion on me, L5 , we'll have to chat about that sometime, I like the serrated for general use & less sharpening & I save the plain edge for SD

Gee thx, now I gotta get a village model & a shiny model lol

OMG, the hookers working on 8 mile road, look like they just walked off the set from the movie "Resident Evil", no kidding, black around the eyes & it ain't make-up, first of the month, they open up the jails & let em out in a big wave,
and now they're laying off 1/3 of the police dept as soon as the "All Star" game is over, so plz tell me, what kind of magical blade will I need ?

Hey Ed Teach, my first real knife was a " Blackjack Mamba", fixed blade & the folders

Drgun Flame - Be welcome here in the Cantina. We're glad you found us.

Since everyone else is offering advice, let me jump in too.
You could do worse than listen to Yvsa's suggetion for your first Khukuri.
For serious arboricide in the 1"-5" range there is nothing like a 17"-18"Ganga Ram Special. It seems to strike in the exact same place time after time.Like it had eyes. It is indeed a "magic" Khukuri. (If you have'n't already done so, check out the story of old Ganga Ram and his magic khukuri in the Khukuri FAQ )

The magic works against "zombies "too.
Baby Ganga Ram Special villager......... cost $80-$125
Look on zombie's face as you sever a 4" tree with one blow.....PRICELESS!!:D :D
