Hallo!

My name is Logan, but I prefer to go by my alias Krimson Draegon. (Krimson for short, some people call me Krims) I'm a 19 year old male from Florida. I've been in the martial arts (Tae Kwon Do) since I was 4 years old (I practiced in dojhangs off and on, but I've stayed in practice privately the whole time), I now practice Bujinkan.

I've been interested in blades for as long as I can remember. I have three swords (a bastard-style sword, a zweihander, and a shinobigatana) and many, many knives. I've always been interested in all things bladed, whether it be making them, maintaining them, using them, etc. I've got a few junk blades I use to practice new sharpening and polishing techniques, some I practice hardening and tempering on, etc. However, the pride and joy of all of my knives are - yeah, you guess it! My khukris.

I've never been very into khukri. I remember watching a special on Nepal on T.V. once, where they briefly covered khuks, but I never really sought them out.

I was sent a khukri at the beginning of this year from a friend in Nepal. It's a Service No. 1 model from Khukri House. I like this knife a lot and quickly took to carrying it with me everywhere and using it for every job imaginable. I've used it to bust concrete, remove doors from a mobile home, chop up trees, split logs, hammer in nails, cut out caulk around a tub, I could go on and on.

I've been lurking here for a while and I've been wanting to buy a Himalayan Import khuk since I got my KH one. Naturally I had to pay for this one though. :P I wanted a chiruwa ang khola, but at the last second went with the 20 inch AK instead. I have to say I am not disappointed. :D

Shortly after I placed the order I e-mailed Yangdu and requested for a heavier variant because I have been doing heavy chopping and wanted a slightly bigger and heavier blade to help move the work along. (If only I knew...) I quickly got a polite and helpful reply letting me know that there was a beefy model in stock and that it would be send out ASAP. I was very pleased with the swiftness of the reply. ^^

However, I was even more surprised how fast the blade got here! That all took place on Saturday. The khukri was mailed on monday and I sit here on Wednesday droling over it in person! Wow!

First of all - Dang! Is this a BEEFY knife or what?! Goodness! It makes my Service No. 1 look and feel like a tooth-pick. I used to think that was a huge knife also... This 20 inch is a monster! I can't wait to try it out on something! My heart flutters just thinking about it! I wish I had something really worthy of being chopped down by such a blade, but the dead hardwoods I have to work on will have to do for now. Maybe later I'll chop down a telephone pole. What'll that take with this? Like 3 good swings? ^o^ Seriously though, I'm going to have to get some bigger and harder wood for this bad boy.

I'm about to do some work with it. I don't have a digital camera, but I'll try to take as many pictures as I can with my camera phone and put in my opinion about how it performed. :P I just wanted to introduce myself and such first.

Cheers,
Krimson Draegon

P.S. Sorry if this comes off as rambling. I'm playing with the AK now and fantasizing about different trees that were laughing at me earlier. Plus, I just tend to ramble at times. :D

Welcome, KD. Pull up a chair and stay awhile. Much to learn and the company is fine.

(You may want to check with your local utility company before chopping down any telephone poles, though. :D)

Welcome. Make sure you explore a bit - start with the safety thread, and soak in lots of the other wisdom that gets tossed around.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I agree, much to learn. ^^

Is it too late to call them if I already took it down? Lol

I got done a few minutes ago doing some low level work on two living trees that I've been meaning to cut down. I'll upload some pictures soon. They were hanging over my shed and one was about to fall on it, so I just decided it'd be best to fell them and get it over with. I'm very pleased with how fast the work went. I could have gotten out the chainsaw and taken about 10 minutes extra to don the safety glasses and fill the gas tank, but I decided to break in my new blade. (Which I've named "Albtraum" (german for Nightmare) since this blade is going to be the nightmare of everything I am about to cut. ;) )

The trees were young and green, about 6 or 7 inches in diameter maybe. Didn't take much work. Three light, half-hearted swings had them down. The first one went about half-way through the trunk, one more to fell it, and the third on the back side to sever the remaining bark and ligaments holding it together. Then I cut them up into several pieces. All in all about 7 minutes work. (including how long it took to load them on my trailer) I could also have done it with my little khukri, but I already took one down with that the other day (I think Friday) and it took me about 25 minutes. (Mind, that one was dead and dry)

Of course, the blade has no sign of use. I didn't even break a sweat in the hot Florida sun. I was able to hold my ice-cold Dr Pepper in one hand and hack the trees up with the other. :D

I can't wait for tomorrow! (That's when I'll be back on my jobsite and I have some huge sand-pines to cut up. A few are dead and they should take me all day!) The back part of my yard is wooded. I'm so excited that I might go back there and clear it (like I've been meaning to do for a while now) tonight when it cools off!

Thanks for the MAGNIFICENT blade Yangdu! I'll be sure to treat it nicely and satiate it's appetite everyday. *wicked grin*

I'll try and post some pics later of the work today and tomorrow. My phone is giving me problems uploading my pictures.

Welcome to the HI Forums Krims!!!!!!! :D

As has been mentioned, be sure and read the safety thread, and read it every day for a week so that you won't hold a Dr Pepper in one hand and hack the trees up with the other!!!!  :p ;)
That is a very unsafe method of using your khukuri even if you're an old master and if you're an old master you ain't gonna be doing that sort of thing to begin with. Also while you're at it, if you haven't already, take a turn through the FAQ's, lottsa good info in them!!!! :D

Welcome to the Cantina Krimsin, I enjoyed reading your post. It made me think about my 20" AK. I think I need to take it out and try it again.:)

Thanks for the welcome all!

(Side-note to any who took the Dr Pepper thing seriously: As I've said - I've been in martial arts all my life (since I was about 4 anyway) and I've had too much experience with blades (weapons in general really) to have actually done something that stupid. >_< Plus, the trees were only 7 inches or so, so I had to hold them down or they would have bounced around too much! :P It was just a figure of speech saying that it was really easy) (not to mention I might have spilt my drink...)

My phone is giving me problems and I can't upload pictures right now, but I've got some from the work I did today on the pines. The khuk did a marvelous job of making the work quick and easy. It took me about as long as I expected, but overall it didn't take too much effort on my part. I'm extremely pleased that the blade still looks BRAND-NEW! Seriously, my other one was not tempered right or something because everytime the blade makes contact with almost anything it chips, rolls, or such. Plus, scratches galore... The AK looks like it just came out of the box. (Which was actually my first piece I cut up. I always cut up the box the blade came in, isn't that the point? As long as you look out for staples...)

Overall I can see what all the fuss is about. I've handled a lot of blades in my day and I'd give this one, for what it is, a solid 10 out of 10. Heck, I'd rate it a ten in comparison to others I've handled. It definately beats my shinobigatana. (previously my favorite blade)

I took it to my Bujinkan class last night for my friends (the instructor, his assistant, and a top student) to handle. They all liked it very much and asked where I got it and felt, for the price, it was a bargain also. I'd not hesitate to buy from HI again! ^o^

Hopefully pictures soon!

Thanks again all! And a special thanks to Yangdu! :D
