Hey, recently joined the forum and have been lurking for a few weeks, so I thought I'd stop being a peeping Tom and say "hello". I'm the one to blame for snagging the villager finish M-43 by Sher in the recent DOD.

This is my first kukri and it's quite a chunk. Right out of the box it'll down 2" dia bamboo in a few passes -- impressive! Now I'm on the prowl for something longer and thinner for hacking up clumping grasses. Yeah, I know a weed trimmer would be more efficient but I gotta justify it with the wife somehow. Feel free to make suggestions for a HI kukri that's up to the task.

Thanks to the regulars for building up so much info on the site and this subforum. And thanks to Yangdu and the HI kamis and craftsmen for their great work!

Welcome, and I might as well express my sympathies for the forthcoming bout with HIKV. Good luck with that.

A 20" plus Sirupate, Gelbu Special, or Kobra would probably fill your hacking the clumping grasses need.

Welcome to the party, glad to have you. Machete is my recommendation for the grass. It's size gives you lots of leverage, just be sure to resharpen frequently.

agree completely with siru suggestion as your next buy, it is meant for leafy greens and lighter work, probably my favorite style of khukuri, gator is also correct that a good machete would probably be better, but a sirupate sure is prettier :D

Welcome! Grats on the m43 snag! A Sirupate or Kobra model would work best for grass slaying, as Gehazi said, a machete may be a bit more practical, but a Siru is a lot prettier.

Welcome fellow HIKV victim. Glad to hear you're looking for a second. Cul is right on with his recommendations. A sirupati, Gelbu and kobra are all great choices. I WWII 18 under 25oz would also be very useful. I have seen them before and the ww2 is one of my favorite designs.

Hasiya Baby! Not too common and wicked cool. No I don't have one YET.

Glad you found us Cheerwino. Lots of really smart folks around here an quite a few like me who hang around for the fun and friendship.

Welcome Cheerwino! Glad your enjoying your M43 beast! For grass I go with the lightest and thinnest edge you could possibly get. If you want the reach of a machete then the 25" blades like Kobra and Sirupati will save you some back aching. If its just the occasional clump of grass id snag one of the larger Reti Kobras around 20". If you dont need much reach at all i would grab a Hasiya. I use a 25" Sirupati because i can cut branches, low hanging limbs, etc and the thicker Sirupati edge can handle that. The Kobra edge is a bit thinner being primarily a fighting knife but if you dont plan to chop wood with it then it would probably be better than the Siru because it is lighter. I would really love to have a 25"+ Kobra for the light bush around here but they dont come up very often. Another that comes to mind is 21" Single fuller Chitlangi because of its fast thinner edge and it sure is beautiful!

Forgot all about the Hasiya...assuming you want to squat down, or bend down.
True! I often thought a Hasiya on a long pole would be perfect.
btw Thats nice cul! I got me one too (for my wife). She said I could keep it with my collection:D Shes so sweet!

edit: Now thats a pretty site cul:thumbup:

My 21" Single fuller Chit. This one is my lawn mower. Hard on the back tho for grasses because of the lack of reach but great for bushwhacking. Those weeds in the background (goosefoot chenopods) grow to about six feet tall and are invasive as google. They are everywhere! There are so many of them I just have to wait till about this time of year then drag a pipe or 4x4 across them to lay them down then collect them and burn them. I do keep them trimmed around walking paths between house, shop and such. I dont like grass much but im getting to like it better than these weeds so looks like ill be mowing a yard next summer for the first time in about 15 years. I want to get a reel mower but hard to find a good one. I wish HI could hammer me out one:D

Me too. As soon as she saw it, she laid claim on it, of course, I can keep it in my collection, and be responsible to clean it, and basically care for it, until she needs it...:)

You know exactly what I mean, don't ya?

Welcome to the shark infested waters of HI, Cheerwino. Glad you got the M43. It will serve you well, but be warned. Just because you bought one HI khukuri already, IT WILL NOT, I repeat, IT WILL NOT prevent the contagion of HIKV. There is no cure regardless of how low your funds may be, how ever much the spouse throws a tizzy fit, alas, you cannot be cured. You are invited to join either or both HIKV support groups: Himalayan Imports Khukuri Anonymous and/or the Sekret Woolie Hat Society. Need to learn Kumbya so you can sing along while Bawanna & Kamidog lead in the group hug.

Hey man welcome aboard and sorry at the same time :D, this area can be very hard on the wallet. Very good snag on your first, great blade all around. Enjoy your time here and feel free to ask questions.
