Greetings from florida!!

I am spending the first couple of days at a friends house and have access to the forums(thank the gods)

This is my first time back in florida since I was a little boy. Strange place this florida. Now I know why Mike Turber is so weird

I am so use to the upstate NY scenery, I feel like I am in an episode of "Land Of The Lost" Nothin but palm trees and lizards.(I do like lizards, though.) I spent the first day catching lizards for my son. Does anyone know what kind of lizards these are? They are small, with narrow heads and mostly brown in color. They do not look like skinks, anoles or geckos, but I could be wrong.

Well, I just wanted to say hello. I'll talk to you all soon. I hope the forum does not fall apart, being that I am not there. Are you guys gonna be ok without me?

Part of the city I live in is pretty rural, streets with no houses at all and we call it "The Land That Time Forgot".

Welcome

John

The common lizards you are catching are probably "green anoles", but they are also (incorrectly)known as "chameleons" or "geckos" in those parts...

There was an interesting article a while back in one of th newspapers. The brown lizards are Cuban anoles and have effectively destroyed the green anole population. When I was a kid, the little green lizards were everywhere (and they were called chameleons because they could change to brown and back). Sometime in the last 15 years or so, the Cuban variety got loose here, and they have comepletely displaced/destroyed/eaten the greens.

Yeah, but none of them are as neat as the little bright-orange newts that crawl all over the place where my mother's family lives.

Louis, Louis, Louis you're gone for a few days and already you're forgetting the rules here.
So just to keep this thread open we need to add a little knife content here. So tell us, after you and your son catch these little critters what knife are you using to skin them?

Good luck at lizard-hunting. Can we expect to see lizardskin sheaths offered at martial way soon?

Just couldn't stay away, could you? Glad to see you didn't suffer from nonBladeForumitis for too long. Find any good knife shops yet?

Lois,
Welcome to the land of HUMIDITY!!!! As a transplanted NYer, I know what your going through.
The thing I miss most about NY is deer hunting in Stueben County!! I CANT get exited about going hunting in shorts and sweating my A$$ off!!!!
Watch out for the big toothed, BIG black lizzards that hang around the lakes and ponds!!

Forget the big "lizards" the mosquitos will drain you dry long before the gators do. When I first moved down from NYC I tried hiking a trail in the Everglades during summer.

I made it about 200 yards before everything went black. Never saw so many mosquitos. It was litterally a blinding cloud of them. We spent 30 minutes sealed up in a car killing them off, and my white shirt was completely covered with their remains. DO NOT HIKE THE EVERGLADES DURING THE SUMMER (BTW bug spray probably attracts them - they just bite a little less)

Welcome to Florida!
The Cuban Brown Anole Lizards your seeing have become the dominant species here because they are highly prolific little bastids. Our native green species have been literally bred out of their house and home by these horny little brown lizards because the greens only breed at a fraction of the rate the browns do.
A real bummer if your a green Anole.
I trust you'll be visiting the Magic Kingdom while your here?
Since I go every couple of weeks on average to Disney,(32 times in 1999), may I be so bold as to make some reccomendations pertaining to your visit there?
First I would like to cover the subject of knives at Disney.
I "look" conservative in my appearance and experimented with what I could get away with in the parks and found that I could safely carry a medium size (4-5" blade) fixed blade with no undue or unwanted attention from Disney's Police Force. And trust me, they do have a Police Force there. Uniformed and plain clothes, they are everywhere. Anyway, this size knife is totally useless there so I have taken to carrying my regular everyday carry folders. You'll want to carry at least a folder because the "cutlery" you are given to eat with at the eating establishments are NEVER very sharp and you end up tearing your food apart more than cutting it. And that sucks big.

Now to the fun stuff:

If you go to EPCOT this time of year, make sure you go on Saturday or Sunday. During the weekdays this time of year, school age kids inundate the park on field trips and they can be quite raucus and are seldom well supervised. You'll find yourself waist deep in demon-seed rugrats Hell bent on commiting mayhem and I assure you, unless your on Prozac, you won't have a good time.

For the Magic Kingdom, Tuesday and Wednesday, for some odd reason, are consistently the least crowded days this time of year. We've found that Saturday can be a great time to visit here also, if and ONLY if there isn't any special event going on in the area that weekend. The park often closes at 7:00 pm so make sure you go early enough to see and do all you may wanna cover that day. Also, take the oppurtunity when the parades start to hot foot it over to the more popular rides like Space Mountain as the lines drop dramatically in volume a lot of the time when the parade begins. ALSO, take advantage of the "Fast Pass" feature at the more popular attractions to avoid waiting in lines.

For Disney-MGM, Monday and Tuesday are the best days to go this time of year. Again, it's a mystery to me as to why this is so, but hey, it works if you are one that doesn't like waiting in huge lines playing the tourist shuffle. You'll not want to miss out on seeing a totally awesome show that happens at 8:00pm called FANTASMIC! at MGM. This is a must see show and you'll wanna be in line for this one at least an hour before showtime so you'll get a decent seat. Heed this advice, young Jedi lest you miss out entirely as this event frequently gets more people trying to get in then there are available seats and you get turned away.(bummer).

For Animal Kingdom, there always seems to be a crowd since this is the newest park, but Monday is THE day to avoid this place unless you enjoy the feel of a New York subway at 5:00pm on Friday. There are several "must see" things at this park that are highly recommended.
"It's Tough to be a Bug" is under the big centerpiece "Tree of Life" and is a 3-D theatre type show.
In DinoLand go experience the "Countdown to Extinction". It's a motion-simulator track ride type ride and will put your spine outta whack if your a senior citizen age person, so be warned.
A Tarzan live stage show is pretty dazzling and is worth a look.

If your going to Disney, I hope this helps.

But remember, this info is for the month of September and the first part of October and whatever you do, don't ever, never under any circumstance go to Disney World during any holiday or holiday period, unless of course, you are a masochist in the extremest sense of the term, for those time frames are torturous in the extreme with crowds that are, to say the least, Biblical in size and proportion.

Misque,
Certifiable Disney Nut and desperately in need of a new hobby.

Thanks for the comments, guys. It is good to hear from you all. Let me tell you. I just got back from the driving range and found out the hard way about the mosquitos. Man are my legs eaten up!!

Phil, I am using my 7' long dragon slayer spear. These little guys are tough. On a serious note, my small Sebenza is holding up fine. We went to Kenedy space center today, and from going in and out of the air conditioning my blade was covered with condensation. I wiped it off on my pants and the blade is fine.

I saw my first aligator in the wild today. That was awesome. I am not sure but I think it was carrying a Hossom Millinnium black fighter(maybe my desire for this knife is causing me to hallucinate.

Well, I am leaving my friends house tomorrow morning and will not be able to get to the forums again until I get home. I'll talk to you all soon. Take care.
