Made it. Yesterday recovery day. Today visiting with brother Fred. Tomorrow AM off the Springfield to see Dad.

Hang in. See you Oct, 1 but will drop in for short takes and short posts.

Moistening your lips with Johnny Walker is a sure-cure for jetlag. Careful not to get it in your mouth, though.

grrr.
<pretend anger> <Pretend anger>

Uncle Bill:

Do NOT check in.

I recall once when I called in to the office mid-vacation, shortly after the stress had melted away. A stupid decision had been made that I couldn't do anything about anymore. Stress came back. Robbed me of the total number of stress-free days.

STOP CHECKING IN. Workaholism is a problem. Check out post from Mamav on new virus. Wait, no, stop checking in.

(Best wishes and hopes and all that. Hang in there.)

I'm glad to see that you are getting quality time with the family. Too many people don't when they should have.:)

Glad you had a safe trip, enjoy yourself, the Cantina will still be here when you get back.:D

McCallum's better, actually any of the Single Malts is better, even the 5-6 year old Bowden's. And you can swaller it ifen ye'r a mind ta. :p

Speaking from experience you know. I recall the Johnny Walker days, but then I gradyeated to Jamie's, then to Crawfords.
If you don't know better you would swear that Crawford's is Chivas.:)
I'm still nurseing my bottle of McCallum that I bought about 5 years ago or so, maybe 4 years ago, I've slept since then. I bought the McCallum along with 2 other good single malts I hadn't tried before and the Mc came out on top as my all time favorite.

Uncle Bill, Glad you're having a good time.

Yvsa, I'm with you about the McCallan.

Most American whiskey is too sweet for me. Straight rye is OK--guess I like grain liquor better than corn liquor...

And a good single-malt is about as good as it gets in the strong liquor realm. McCallan is pretty good, but kinda over-sherried I think. Seems to pick up so much taste from the barrels (previously used for sherry) that some of the scotch taste is gone. But then I prefer the less than subtle ones like smokey/peaty Laphroig, Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Talisker. The ones described as being similar to iodine, burning tires, etc. All made on the small neighboring islands. Glad some don't like them--more for me. Too bad they're getting so danged expensive now. 25 years ago you could get a bottle of Laphroig 10 yr for around $8-9. Now it's about $50. Anybody who says there's no inflation is nuts (or working for the government departments that benefit from low inflations numbers).

Highland Park from Orkney one it's hard to go wrong with--not hugely smokey and peaty, but it's there.

Hennesy Very Special Old Pale Reserve. Not available last I heard. Goes from VSOP to the ultra expensive.

The drinking of whisky has always been a mystery to me.

I’m not talking about at a party, or a bar, or with the guys on a fishing trip. I have done all of that, but it’s always been with the intent to get drunk to one degree or another. In other words I was using whisky as a drug to modify my mood or my state of consciousness.

What I’m talking about is the image I have seen all my life in the movies and on TV of people drinking whisky as a normal part of their daily routine. For example the guy comes home from work and the first thing he does is pour a glass of whisky from a decanter located just a few feet from the door.

Or a guy is at “the office”. When “clients” come in, he offers them a glass of whisky from a decanter located a few feet from his desk. Or, if he is the kind of guy who works with his tie loosened, he has a bottle in his desk drawer which he hits during times of stress and will share with co-workers or subordinates when the plot calls for empathy or bonding.

I have never known anyone who acted like this either at work or at home unless he was a hard core alcoholic and that’s not usually the image that’s being portrayed. But then again I have never known anyone who wore a suit and tie just sitting around in his own home either. I don’t get it. What is this whisky drinking supposed to signify?

BEN

Same as cigarette smoking in the movies. SALES AND PROMOTION

Some if not all movies were subsidized by Liquor/Beer/Tobacco companies for encouraging Liquor/Beer/Tabacco. Acceptable patterns of behavior. I smoke, drink occasionally, although I have a built in 'governor'. I call for 'RALPH' at the kamode very easily and a couple of drinks for me in the day is like a sleeping pill to me.

I had a Bar/Lounge/DriveUp Pkg store for 12 years. If I had a couple of beers with customers during the day, say Goodnite.... I had to go take a nap. :)

Good thing, I never found a favorite drink, drinking up the profits is not good business. PLUS if inebreated ? OK Drunk on my a$$, doesn't help monitor the business, customers, help or could get you killed.

For a small Lounge Pkg store, with live Band Entertainment on Fr/Sa/Su, I did pretty well. Gave my employees health insurance, better than average wages and THEY STILL STOLE FROM ME. Putting in cameras sure helped, but pi$$ed a few people off. You wouldn't believe the methods used to cheat the employer.
