hi folks:

just wanted to say hello, I'm new to the forum; and a re-newed enthusiast of folding knives. Lately, I'm into tactical folders, and by tactical I mean pocket clips and handy opening- not fighting machines.

I'm thinking about buying a benchmade, and would be looking for recomendations from their line. I use my knives, and prefer fullsize assisted openers- any thoughts? favorites from BM?

best to all

Not sure about full-size AO, but if you like a large user, the Rift is nice. It was really hard choosing between this one and a Gayle Bradley, but steel settled it for me. Still looking back at it though.

If you need convincing about the lack of assisted opening, I'm sure FlaMtnBkr will be along shortly :D

If you want an assisted opening one the 580 Barrage is the way to go.

The other option is to get the 710. It's a BM classic, it's also a manual knife but you can open it just as fast as an assisted knife. Most AXIS lock Benchmades are very fast deploying.

The new 790 subrosa is a grewat looking knife. It Assited and a Ti frame lock. The 890 Torrent is a nice little AO liner lock as well. As for bad ass snap try a 585-1 Mini barrage, They have g-10 handles but they are sub 3". The full size barrage is 580 but no G-10.

As for non assited get the 950 Rift or an HK 14205. They are both tanks! The Rift is a little better slicer. The HK 14205's blade is thick and very tough.

Hi netjamer -

**edit** I apologize - I just noticed that you are looking for a full-sized knife, and I posted about a pocket-sized knife.

I would suggest a mini-griptilian as your first taste of Benchmade.

It will show you how they do the axis lock, and the nice bronze bushings etc, and there are many variations of the design to choose from.

Additionally, the knife is a very nice everyday companion, being just large enough while also being just small enough (at least for me).

I purchased mine for around $60 delivered to my home.

Here I am :D

If getting a Benchmade I suggest getting one with the AXIS lock as it is what defines Benchmade to me. They don't make many AO knives but with the AXIS lock it really isn't needed and is just as quick. You pull back the lock bar and then you can quickly flip the knife both open and closed and its location keeps your fingers away from the blade path. Not only that but it has good closed blade retention and is one of the strongest locks made.

My all time favorite knife is the 950 Rift. A close second is the H&K 14205. The latter is a little more heavy duty and has a slightly thicker blade than the average pocket knife. The new bone collector also looks very promising. The 710 was the first AXIS lock knife and is widely loved but I personally like the ones I mentioned better.

I love my Nitrous Stryker Mini. It´s an AO that´s got the super strong Nitrous opening. No flimsy springs that can pop out and break. And it´s quite big for a mini knife. PICTURE HERE!

Wow, lots of great info, thanks much-- been viewing the benchmade site most of the day. I think it may be down to a Griptillian or the rift. A/o is not a must- I just like many of the knives I have with it. I may be a bit knife crazy atm..
My EDC rotation has become quite full in the last few months, but I've wanted to branch out and compare other brands. Most of my stuff is CRK & CRKT & Kershaw, my current favorite EDC has been a Kershaw offset (heavy days) or a spec bump. I use the CRK large sebenza for "dress days".
I've wanted to sample Benchmade, SOG and maybe ZT.

As a builder/remodeler I get to use the snot out of my knives- And sometimes for much more than just cutting. It's amazing what you can do with a knife if it's the only tool at hand. Like when your on a ladder or the apprpriate tool is just too far away. As a result-some of my old stuff is just FUBAR- I have an old gerber AR3.0 that became a grout rake tool. but, that was only after the tip broke off prying up floor tiles- wish I could post a pic.

So, hence the new stuff- and now it's become a bit of an obsession..- Like with the Sebenza--...ahhhh..

I had a BM 585 (mini barrage) and it was an awesome knife. I sold it so I could get more funds to try an 890 Torrent, but it was great. The only problem with AO knives with a locking mechanism like Axis lock is that it makes it a bit harder to close with one hand....

Wow the 790subrosa is nice,hmmm... I feel like I need to own an axis lock - so the grip and rift (nod to flamtnbkr) are still top of the list... but that 790? anyone know anymore about it?

even though its not an AO the 940 opens with the speed of an assisted and carries much lighter. if it had to be an AO then the nitrous stryker is a good knife.

I'll put a vote in for the Bone Collector. If you haven't seen it yet check it out as it is a real masterpiece and for the price they're selling at its a crime not to give it some serious consideration. Its a real heavy duty knife with full steel liners (drilled out to reduce weight) underneath very thick sculpted black/green g10. The blade is a very utilitarian shape and is made of D2 so its tough as nails and holds an edge for a long time. The hole opener is a cool feature that isn't seen on many BMs but makes it IMO easier to open with either hand even with gloves on. To top off the entire package is has a very nice ribbed g10 backspacer that protrudes out the back of the handle.

For the money I think that the Bone Collector folder offers more features for your money than anything else in their lineup.

yes the bone collector is nice, I checked it out a bit today- and for the money seems very nice indeed. SO... I think it's down to a Griptillian ( maybe a ritter) The 950 Rift, and the 15020 bone collector...damn all three sounds better! And maybe a pre-order on a sub rosa?- I'll probably end up with them all eventually... I had a little accident tonight and bought a sog arcitech?- any opinions on that?
