Hi everyone....I'm back (back on my back)

I just got back home. The disc herniation was a lot worse than expected. There were two, both at L4-L5 and both had the cord firmly pinned against the back of the canal. The doc and pa made me feel like a stud when they said that they've never seen someone tolerate something like this. I'd rather be a whimp and not have it. I got a toradol (great IM antiinflammatory)shot and two doses of IV decadron (steroid...and no my muscles aren't growing)...I had two percocet after surgery (6:00 PM) and nothing since. I feel great....isn't it amazing. Still have numbness in L5 dermatone (down the outside of my left leg) but it has decreased by about 75 percentand and should be completely gone in the next week or so. the severe butt pain is virtually gone. My lower back feels like I was in a knife fight.

They had a very hard time intubating me and before done it took two anesthesiologist. The first question I ask...I thought that only happened to obese people. They said my trachea was very high and anterior and thus my anatomy made it hard. I was given a versed shot (causes amnesia) before going to surgery. Don't remember anything until they pulled this LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG tube out of my nose (the intubated me this way (fiberscopic))....that hurt. Guess I told the PA, while on Versed, that if he could pick out the 10 pictures I drew in my book...he could attend my class for 1/2 price. Can't remember a thing.

Post surgery...the only problem has been having a BM. I'll spare you the details. Ugggggghhhhh.

One hour after the surgery I did three laps (maybe 100 yds each) around the floor and did this every hour. Went to sleep at midnight woke up at 4:30 AM, 3 laps every hour until 10 am and then off to home. the ride hurt but I'm ok now that I am in my bed. Between the car and bed I walked around the lower deck (we have 8 acres with three decks that make up ANEW's ropes and wilderness survival didactic area) to see what the recent rains have done. Looks great other than lots of elk sign.

The neurosugeion said I couldn't bend at the waist of lift for 3 to 4 weeks. Will begin the treadmill in a day or so (slow) and the stationary bike in 1 week (hard). I am hosting the Skamania County winter fest the weekend before our January 20-23, 2000 winter survival trip. He said I'll be 100 percent for both but I will probably let Bill Frye (the other instructor who's credentials are the same as mine) do most of the heavy stuff. We still have openings and the 15% discount for members of this forum still stands. We'd love to have you guys come.

Thanks for you concern, emails, and prayers.

Take care,

Welcome back Greg..Take your time comin' back and hey,,,good luck with the BM's!!

GREG: Glad to hear evberything went so well.

Just be careful not to OVERexert yourself and do as the doc says. It's better to let things heal correctly than push it and hurt yourself.

Glad to have you back so soon!

Rob,

those BM's can be such a problem :>) I shouldn't have taken those narcs before the surgery. But as a pharmacist you know that don't you. I must be getting old...only old people talk about their bodily functions :>))))))))))

Ouch, any surgery is not good, but this sounds rather serious. Take care, do what the doctor tells you, after all in THIS instance, he is the professional and you the patient. Do not push it, and good luck.

I know what you mean about long things they fit where you have no idea where. Had sinus surgery last year, watched when he pulled out the packing a week later. This thing was HUGE!!! Like 3 times the size of one of those sanitary napkin things!! He pulled it out my nose!!! It felt like he was slipping out my brain or something, oddest feeling in the world.

I'm glad to hear that the surgery was successful & I'm sure you're well on your way to a speedy recovery. I have two friends who went through the same or similar procedure and each is doing great. As a occasional back sufferer myself, also L4 & L5, I followed their progress with keen interest.

Cheers,

I may be goin' to hell in a bucket, Babe, but at least I'm enjoyin' the ride.

Well it has now been a full three days since I gave in and lost the knife fight with the neurosurgeon. I have been home for two days now. I spend a lot of time in bed...walking around the house...and keeping tabs on the forum. The timing for my bedrest has allowed me the opportunity to get a feel for the members (present and future) of this forum. What an outstanding group of like minded individuals.

thanks to everyone who has supported me through my surgery and recovery with prayers, email, postings, and positive thoughts.---IT MEANT A LOT AND HELPED EASE THE LONELINESS THAT WOULD HAVE OTHERWISE BEEN PRESENT.---I am getting better everyday. I can't wait until I'm in the woods again...teaching the skills related to wilderness survival (january 20-23).

Hi gang,

Just an update on the back...gotta keep you guys informed :>)

I'm now 10 days post surgery. I am walking on the tread mill 20 minutes, biking 5 minutes, and step up 2 minutes ...since monday. Can't start running for another two weeks...(not sure I could yet anyway)

I have been working at the clinic seeing patients 1/2 days since monday....will go to full days next monday.

I have about 5 % numbness still left in my left foot (from where it was) and the bad hip pain is gone. I am still tight down the left leg but continue to work on it with stretching. Still some mild weakness but my reflexes are back and my foot doesn't drop. I have improved everyday and today is the first day I have felt great...

the only drugs I take are Naprosyn (aleve) and vitamens that help with nerve healing.

I anticipate a full recovery within 3 to 5 weeks ...just in time for our January 20-23 trip. We still have openinings if you'd like to join us ( http://www.ssurvival.com - don't forget, there is a 15% discount for forum members ) :>)

thanks again to everyone for their support... I am recovering fine and at this point...enough to make this my final post about it. :>)
