Hi HM,
Thanks for asking. It was a lot of fun. I went up on Friday and set my camp up... a large parachute canopy overhead and a huge fire. Also put up my GP Medium tent (500 sq feet) for the other event participants to use. In all the event provided:
-Free snowshoe use with a guide
-Xcountry skiing
-Sledding
-Snowman building contest
-Food and hot chocolate
-Two-two hour survival presentations by me
My presentations revolved around...guess what...yeah you are right...the "five survival essentials". I had everything layed out and went over each. The two hour presentation was a good introduction to wilderness survival and each had about 50 onlookers. I covered:
1. Personal Protection
-Clothing (colder acronym)
-Shelter (options/multi-use items)
-Fire (demo of manmade and natural tinders/heat sources to include flint and steel, metal match, and bow and drill (my back would not let me do a complete bow and drill demo
))
2. Siganling (whistle, signal mirror, ground to air signal, etc.)
3. Sustenance (water and food Identification and procurement...everyone loved talking about slugs and maggots
)
4. Travel (with and without a map and compass)
5. Health (psych stress, environmental injury, traumatic injury)
I don't know if anyone from the forum made it or not. If they did they didn't introduce themselves
I'm thinking about offering a day long class that covers these issues and allows students to practice using a metal match, make signals, and immediate action shelters... Kind of a basic introduction to wilderness survival for the backcountry traveler
Thanks again for asking, HM... Best
