I have searched old threads and am still unsure.

Brute: I see some indication of grey Brutes in 1095 and 440A. Mine has no markings whatsoever - nice leather sheath - semi-gloss grey coating. ANy way to tell which steel short of testing for corrosion?

Campanion: Mine also has no markings and nice leather sheath but coating is more like powder coat - matt. Also blade obviously hand-ground. 1095?

I have an older Becker Campanion, bought around 1995. The blade had a grey paint-like coating; I removed the grey coating from the blade but left it on the tang. It came with an Eagle sheath, cordura with a plastic non-Kydex liner.

My understanding is that the steel on my Campanion is 1095. It certainly isn't stainless, as there has been some mild corrosion. I've read that some pre-Camillus Beckers were made from a variety of steels, including 440A.
Also have seen, on somebody's website, a Blackjack Becker catalogue that states the steel being used was 0170-6, but it was noted that actual steel used was 1095. I'll try to find that website.

Marty, thanks for the link, but that sirte has no info on BK&T knives except date when that line was purchased by BJ.
