I plan on traveling by Grey Hound down to South Carolina in a week and I am curious about being able to carry a knife/multi-tool. I checked their website and it is not very specific about whether or not a knife is allowed.

I plan on carrying my swiss spirit "S" and possibly another folder if it is allowed.
Also, if I am allowed to bring a knife, would it be better to carry it in my carry on bag, or in my checked luggage?

Any advice would be fantastic, I would rather not have to travel without a knife if possible. :D

Btw, I was checking South Carolina knife law and it appears as though only a knife with a blade under two inches is allowed. Is this correct?

I don't know if Greyhound has different rules for the U.S. , but in Canada they want knives stored in checked luggage. Our local bus depot has a poster which has an extensive list of items not allowed in checked and/or carry-on luggage. I remember a person that had some cheapo souvenir swords and they went in the checked luggage on the bus.

Thank you very much. I will probably call greyhound later on just to check and see.

Going thru Chicago a couple of years ago the actualy used the wand metal detector on departing passengers said no knives except in checked bags. Funny how that works out a lady stepped out of the terminal for a smoke and was mugged , gues the crooks picked up on this situation real quick.

Don't go to parties with metal detectors. Sure it feels safe inside, but what about all those N***ers outside with guns? they know you aint got one.

I've traveled on grey hound before. Clearly carrying of any sort of knife is not allowed. However I accidentally had my EDC clipped in my pocket when I got on. It didn't matter at all.

While I agree about the metal detector part, your VERY poorly disguised racial slur is offensive and pointless.:thumbdn:
And before you say I "don't get it" living in Canada, over 20% of our population in Ontario is now visible minorities, and yet, strangely, it STILL remains my fellow white folks who cause the greatest amount of violence, rapes, thefts, etc.
You can always head off to StormFront(not sure of the punctuation) if you want a place where you can rant without trying to be cute with ***.

P.S.-unless you meant naggers(like the on the South Park episode), but somehow, I severely doubt it.

I was quoting Chris rock...did you click on the link? I wasn't trying to offend, simply quoting. It was a joke, not an actual point haha.

checked luggage only. I have been through a spot check, and they confiscated my SAK, with no option to keep it and not go, or to put in under the bus.

In an unrelated incident, I was menaced by a group of thugs in the back of a bus, and the driver told me that it was not greyhounds resonsibility, and I should expect that kind of behavior. Esentualy, you get what you pay for. When I told him Ok, and that I was prepared to defend myself in his bus, he called security, and after my luggage above and below was searched and nothing was found, I was delayed and put on another bus.

Then sorry man.:o
Shoulda checked the link before getting annoyed.
So, once again, sorry.:)

P.S.-anyone see that South Park with "naggers"? I have to admit, I didn't guess the right word.:o

grey hound lets you carry just about anything that you want to in Checked luggage, provided it will not endanger the bus, the other passengers, or the driver.
all things that require permits in your state would need to be accompanied by your permit, of course.

No, they have a 3 page list of what you may carry or put in checked luggage.

Good news is that if you just break their rules all they can do void your ticket or at least I'm not seeing any Federal laws that apply.

Joke or not, it's not allowed in any context.

This is outrageous. I wasn't being bigoted or racist. I was quoting...and a joke at that! I didn't even spell it completely, out of respect.
This is like not allowing kids to read Tom Sawyer because it uses that word. Can you really honestly mean "not allowed in any context?" What if I want to quote Tom Sawyer? What then... am I unable to post that? To what end does this serve?
I had no mal intent in my post. I was apprehensive to post for moment, simply because of the nature of the word.
But I had figured we were all adults. If you think it truly not allowed than fine. Delete my post. But giving me an infraction for what is nothing more than...the use of a word in a purely innocent manner. Again, what end does that serve?

I'm totally against racism, but I have to agree a little with Refty on this one. The main issue I see is that it wasn't explicitly stated right out that it was a joke, leading me to take offense untill I found out the context.
On the other hands, rules is rules and all that; maybe a sticky should be added somewhere that this offensive word is not allowed even in joke form or the quoting of literature-then it would be fair.

Not to mention that paroled convicts often get free bus tickets when they are released from prison. Greyhound's "no means of self-defense" policy on their buses makes about as much sense as a "gun-free school zone". :barf:

prior to 9/11/01 without any problem, I had called to ask and was told
that they don't allow it but "we don't search either, ya know what I mean"?
I doubt you're gonna have a problem at all, don't ask don't tell.

stick in a bic pen or two and a phillips head screwdriver with a decent grip.

It is really hard to disarm a creative person unless you strip 'em naked.
Hmmm... that -could- be a reason to start flying again....

How disturbing that I am still labeled as a bigot and a racist. I appreciate the kind word stabman. But it seems that those in power here feel that me being given a "Racist and Bigotry" infraction is just. I have to admit, I'm pretty pissed off about it. If they want to leave the infraction points, fine. But how dare they label me or what I said as racist or bigoted.

This is truly absurd and, might I say, ignorant.
