Hi guys!

I made my modding on the CS Spike Hawk. I removed the coating

The I put it in a a soaking-mixture of vinegar-essence and regular vinegar. I put it in there about three-and-a-half-hour.

After that, I realized, that there was a grey-to-yellow patina on that hawk

I think, that´s amazing. I like it a lot

Imo that´s because of the mixture of vinegar and vinegar-essence.

What do you guys think?

Do you like it?

Enjoy the pics and saturdays work :)

Kind regards

great work Andi! how does that hawk feel, weight wise? is it light like the trail hawk, or heavier?
thanks brother

Hi shockjockey!

Imo it´s lighter than the TH.

I shortened the handle a little bit. Now it´s perfect.

Here´s a comparison to my TH, I made a hatchet handle on it, but it cracked. So I fixed it with some structure tape

I didn't know about "vinegar essence". 70% acetic acid (instead of the usual 5% in vinegar). I like the patina it gave.

Well, vinegar essence is more on a low cost level. It has more acid than regular vinegar. I don´t know why it gets some grey-yellow patina, but I think I should guys tell you this in an extra thread. So I didn´t post in the "Modding the CS Trail Hawk"-thread.

Kind regards

Hi!

All I can say, the vinegar patina works the same way like it is with any other patina, on knives. Cut with a knife on carbon steel blades some fruits. Patina will rise and rise and that protects the steel of any rust. So far.

The same thing happens to vinegar forced patina. Because it´s also caused on acids, which reacts with the steel on oxygen. So the same effect.

But I to complete, I also oiled the hawk head and the handle with Ballistol weapon oil.

Hope this could help!

Kind regards

Nice patina. I like the spike hawk and find it is useful for many woods running tasks (digging tubers, digging trenches, chipping holes in ice, and would probably work much like as ice axe if sliding on a mountain or glacier, as well as effective against body armor).

Hi guys!

Thank you for the replies. It´s great that you like the job I´ve done.

Well, the TH is heavier because the hatchet handle is an alternative addition to that one. It makes it heavier at all.

Howard, I think, the SH is a nice piece of steel. I´ll see how it works during lumbering jobs (light duty to the hawk; for heavy-duty I use one of my amount of axes and a chainsaw, of course)

Kind regards
Andi
