Grid etching on Wusthof knives?

Does anyone know what the grid etching on the wusthof blades stand for? I just bought some Wusthof Culinar knives and noticed the squares are in different locations. And the location of the blacked out squares on the photos on the Wusthof website : http://www.wusthof.com (main photo on homepage) are different to the ones on my actual knives. Do these stand for production batches or something? Any ideas?

Just a wild guess, but could it designate the year the knife was made?

Something like a certain mark in one of the nine squares corresponds to a year ending in 1-9, and no mark equals a year ending in 0.

that seems to be the consensus btw, does anyone know how to decipher or work it out?
