Hey all,

First, I wish you all a great new year 2002!!!
Does anyone know a model of Griffe "cheapy"... I mean a cheap (asian?) model. 72$ is the regular price for an Emerson Griffe and I find this price very high regarding the complexity of the blade. I may be wrong, but I'm wondering (I'm yet a great fan of Emerson and Perrin stuff).

You get what you pay for.
I thought an Emerson Commander was too expensive for what it is, I was wrong. I got what I paid for, and more than.

Buy the cheap S&W version... get a knife that "supposedly" has 440C in it, from a who knows company, and if it break, you *might* get it repaired, *might* not.

Buy the Emerson, get a knife you can be sure of the steel (its 154-CM in the Griffe, like the rest, right?), from a reputable company, and if there is a defect with it, you know it will be made right ASAP.

Also, by buying the knock off, you are encouraging bladed plagarism, and basically, IMNSHO, buying "stolen" knife designs.

None the less this is just IMNSHO.

Keep an eye on the sale forums here and you should be able to get a Griffe for a lot less than $72. I'm sure even dealers discount it well under that -- I got mine a while back for $48.

Thanks a lot guys for your valuable answers.

Satin, I agree with you regarding plagarism, and I also believe that the Emerson Griffe is a very good product (this the one I'd like to have). It's just that for this model, very basic, I find the price very high... I have the impression to only pay the concept.

When I buy a balisong for instance, I can understand there's a blade, handles, pins to mount. Idem for a folder. I don't want to say there's no work on the Griffe, but man, it's only a short blade.

And mostly, the real reason is that I would not go out with a knife I would have paid $70 as my defense tool knowing that the police could steal it to me :-)

Best wishes,
Guillaume

All claw knives are not rip offs of the Lagriffe! Do you guys really think that Fred Perrin invented the claw shape? The index finger hole? How about Russ Kromer who I *think* is the maker who designed the bearclaw for crkt. Did he rip off Perrin? The claw is long ago designed by nature. The index hole is a natural part of the design. I have a Chavar fang with a large choil. I suppose if the little gap was closed people would scream LaGriffe rip off! Thew emerson doesn't even have scales. The Perrins often don't have hooked blades. Get over it! (Nothing personal, guys.)

That does look like an interesting one, esp. for the money. Has anyone here ever actually handled one of these? After seeing a S&W folder in the flesh for the first time recently, I wasn't impressed.

But this knife looks similar to the Bear Claw, but a little thinner. Does anyone with a Bear Claw care to comment on the thickness of the handle? Looks pretty thick and hard to conceal to me...

The CRKT Bear Claw is one of my favourite knives. The edge comes razor sharp and is easy to sharpen on a rod. The handles are rounded for a comfortable grip and are as thick as your average folder. In fact the handles on mine are just a hair thicker than the handles on my CRKT M16-13Z. If you wear it as a neck knife underneath a loose fitting shirt, it will be not be noticed unless you happen to bend down to tie your shoe laces. I do find it a bit heavy for neck carry, so I usually clip the sheath to my belt or the inside of my jacket inverted. The only thing I don't like about this knife is the Zytel sheath. I really wish CRKT would offer Kydex sheaths instead. In fact, I think a Kydex sheath with Blade-Tech's Tek-Lock would work great for this knife.

Thanks TotC. I had read that string over on GT, but somehow missed the part about removable scales.

Looks like I found the next unit to order...

I own both the Emerson/Perrin "La Griffe" and the S&W badge knife. I've worn/carried the Emerson for about the last five months and found it was very comfortable to carry and use, hiding well under my shirt.
I do agree with the others that it seems a tad expensive for what you get--that's why I picked up one of the S&W blades to see if it was a "cheaper" alternate to the La Griffe. I found it was a ok knife, worth the money I paid for it although I really do like the design of the La Griffe's sheath better.
The bottem line--the La Griffe is nice and if you can get one for a big discount go for it. If not, the S&W or the CRKT "Bear Claw" (I don't own one of those but will pick one up in the future) make reasonably inexpensive substitutes.

When I origionally posted to this thread I decided to order a badge knife from knifecenter. It arrived this moring and I carried it all day on it's neck chain. So far I am pretty impressed. If anyone is interested I will post a review in a few days after I get to try all the options.

If anyone is considering ordering from Botach I suggest searching TGB&U first to see what experiences other members have had with them. Price isn't everything....
