Grind After Teat Treat

As some of you know I am a forge person. The
question is dose anyone grind ther blades after
prolfiling and heat treating except folding knife
blades. I am talking about hollow grind or flat grind
after heat treating. Gib

I do all of my blades that way. After seeing blades warp after grinding them (and wasting my time and material) I started heat treating them right after the profile. Any small amount of warpage that may occur is corrected when I grind or if I try to bend streight after HT its not a total waste if the tip breaks (at least of my time) I'm sure its harder on my belts but it insures I dont waste a couple of hours on a blade.

George Herron does all of his grinding after heat treatment. I believe GenO Denning does the same. I do my clean up grinding after heat treating both carbon and stainless blades. I quess it comes down to figuring out what works best for you.

I agree with Andrew, its what ever works for you. I grind all my blades before HT, but leave just a little thick along the cutting edge, so I can get to good clean steel after HT. I don't have any problems with warpage, but I normalize 3x after forging and 1x after grinding, just before I start my HT cycles.

If Paul Bos does the teat treat there is no reason to regrind. He always sends them back straight. But he doesnt do simple carbon steels. I always normalize 3 times and then anneal at 1325 degrees for 40 minutes. I dont have stress in the steel and hardly have any warping problems. I grind thick and regrind to final size after hardening. Just be careful not to over heat the vulnerable thin edge. Keep that water bucket close and use it after each pass. Use bare hands so you can feel the temperature.

Like Bruce B., I use Paul Bos, I just finish grind after HT. I have known a couple of makers who did their bevel grinding etc., after HT.
As an afterthought; I recently ground some very small fixed blades from 1/8" stock. I think in the future, I will do the bevels, on this size knife anyway, after HT.

Thanks fellas, You have ansered the question, When
I forge most if not all are heat treated after
profiling and befor bevel grinding, I have always
wondered if this was done on stock removel stainless
steel. Thanks agane Gib
