i just noticed that the hollow grind on my new spartan is about 3 mm higher on the right side compared to the left side of the blade.

is this normal for cs or is this something that would be covered by warranty for replacement?

I, for one, would NOT be pleased with that. I have a lot of CS knives, and have never seen such
half assed workmanship. If it was mine, it would go back immediately.....and I have never sent a knife back to the manufacturer in my life. YMMV

It's unfortunately somewhat of a common problem. I would try returning it and asking the seller to try and find one that's ground a little better.

I think its pretty common. The grind is off on my new Ultimate Hunter.

I just received my new Code 4 Spear Point and this is so disappointing, Cold Steel. You would think the new XHP model would have better quality, but compared to my AUS8A Code 4, the new XHP blade grind is POS. For those who says you can fix it by re-profiling the edge, NO! For the 1000th time mentioned, it's not the cutting edge that is off ground(even though that happens 9 out of 10 times anyways), it is the BLADE STOCK, that is being ground unevenly.

My new XHP Code 4 for example, the blade stock is 3.5mm, but when you look at the blade, edge facing you, the edge looks like there is 2mm on the right side and 1.5mm on the left side relative to the blade stock. Also, the spine area, where the flat meets the curve, instead of a straight line, i get small waves, like the grinder moved deeper in the middle of grinding. The new more wear resistance XHP steel probably magnify this issue even further.

My new XHP American Lawman has very severe off grind as well, where the flat part on the right is 3-4mm longer that the left side towards the tip.

I'm beyond disappointed, considering that all 4 of my new CS knives acquired this month have off grind! Code 4 XHP and Lawman XHP was particularly bad considering that they are my favorite.

These should never have passed QC. Fix them Cold Steel!

CS - Great response. Its always dissapointing when people chose to rant about a company rather than trying to call them 1st to explore other solutions.

Yeah. It sucks that they sent out a batch of knives with off grinds, but it sounds like this hkyew guy has no interest in actually trying to let Cold Steel fix his problem.

I have a question, do these off grinds really effect the functionality of the knife, or is it merely cosmetic? I ask simply because, if I was to spend a couple hundred dollars on another brand production knife, and got this kind of fit and finish, I would be upset. But, for what I'm spending on a cold steel and the intended hard use I'm going to put it through, I could care less about how it looks versus how it functions. So, these off grinds, are they causing any issues in use?

I'm not 100% certain but I think it would because an uneven grind will make it favor one side of the knife and it would function more like a chisel grind vs. a V grind. There definitely are performance differences or at least functionality differences between grinds and since their knives were designed to be V grinds you would want them to be even.

I think the bigger issue is that a problem like this isn't excusable even at this price range. Everyone else can get the grind right even for less money so we are holding cold steel to the same standard. This goes doubly when talking about the XHP knives since most of those exceed $100.

I see this as being a bit picky. I find grind errors like this on Benchmades, Spydercos, ZT's and even custom knives. If you want to see really bad grinds start collecting traditional slip joints.

Agree totally. And saying..."you think that's bad, you should see....." Doesn't change a thing. Not just a bit picky....still completely unacceptable, in my book.

BTW, in case you think I'm a CS hater, my CS knives require a huge drawer of their own. ;')
