Grind on the G10 Leeks

I just noticed that the grind on my 1660G10 Leek is a tad different from every other one... it's much curvier and less boxy. It's hard to explain, but here are a few pictures of each. Look at where the S30v and date stamp are.

Boxy:

Curvy (what I'm using):

My Leek is stamped Oct 06. Is the boxy grind the new or old grind?

Both of my Leeks, though not the G10 models, have the "boxier" grind. The newer of mine is dated Sep 07 I think.

Ah, I see. I probably have an older one then.
That, or it's fake. Which would be quite impressive, as it's bombproof aside from a rattling Speedsafe.

One of mine rattles, too. It's not a knock-off to the best of my knowledge and was purchased at a reputable brick and mortar shop in Anchorage. I think you're good!

Speedsafe rattle is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about:thumbup:

As far as the different grinds go, I'm not sure. Could it just be the contrast from the stonewash finish changing to the shiny grind line is playing tricks on your eyes?

Sorry I'm too tired at the moment to get them all out and inspect, but maybe tomorrow:D

I noticed this on a couple of Kershaw Storms I have...

The one on the left is Jan 08... on the right Mar 06. But another guy said he had an 04 that looked like the 08. So maybe in 06 they tried a different grind? I never got a definite answer.

Ah! So it's not just the Leeks. This is quite strange. It makes me wonder why the grind is the way it is.

And yes, I'm aware mine's probably not fake. It was mere speculation and awe, because assuming it were fake, it would be the best/most useful fake I've ever seen.

Just looking at the Storm blades, I would guess that the new grind makes the blade stronger, as there is more metal running a significant length of the spine. I suspect it also represents simpler machining, which is important when you're still trying to deliver top-notch US-made products at competitive prices.

BTW, my Feb '06 G10 Leek is the boxy grind as well. It works for me, if that counts for anything.

By the way (sorry to derail here), but did Kershaw stop date stamping their leeks? The 1660CB I bought this year has no date on the blade, but looks\feels completely legit otherwise...

You just need some grease around the torsion bar. I've had a couple of my Leeks and one of my Blurs rattle....drives me nuts. A little extra grease will stop it.

I may disassemble it and grease it up later, but I think I'll live. :D

Looks like the top leek (boxy) is hollow ground, and the one you have (curvy) in flat ground.
