Grind Sweeping Plunge Cut

Can someone tell me how to grind a sweeping plunge cut on a belt sander? Or point me in the direction of a thread or video which gives some technique or pointers? I see all these awesome pieces and the sweeping plunge is one of the many things that really baffles me!

A light touch and using the edge of my 10" wheel and slowly working the plunge is what does it for me.

ther are a few ways depending o your set up but the most common is to track the grinding belt over the edge of your platten or wheel and let the slack of the belt slope the plunge of your grind. there are far more extremem ways to do it but til i know what yur gear is thats the best i ca do
 
One of the hardest grinds for me to learn. Practice Practice and more Practice. Try to learn how to use just the outer 1/4 edge on the contact wheel and slowly roll to the blade cutting edge. Good luck.
 
It is simply taking off less material at the ricasso by moving the blade a bit faster at the start of the grind. Having the belt a little over the edge of the wheel or platen will help as well. Frank
 
Or you can grinding vertically on a contact wheel and flatten later.
 
Thanks for the response! I currently am using a 1x30 so contact wheels or plattens aren't an option. I might have to buy some cheap 1095 and try out some stuff. I will probably mark the bevel lines with the plunge and where the grind line stops and take it slow. With the knives I have made (not many) I have been grinding them edge down opposed to edge up like most I have seen. Is there a reason most people grind edge up?
 
edge up lets you see better where the plunge starts adn so long as you are even on both sides its the best judge. i made many a knife on a 1x42 grinder and even went so far as makign a new platten for it out of a 1 inch pipe (made my sweeping plunges a snap ) try really hard not to let gear stop your skills
 
When I first learned to grind. I could some nice sweeping grinds but somewhere along the way I lost the ability. Wich really aggravates me. Some practice may be in my future. I have found that I grind far better on a 3,5,10 inch wheel than a 8. I grind with the cutting edge down with the belt rotating away from me.

Did you just replace the stock one with the pipe? how did you prevent the underside of the belt from rubbing the edge of the pipe? Ill have to play around with making a new one; i have been thinking about making a longer one for wider blades.

Thanks Straub! Your page is very helpful! I tip my hat to your work. I will definitely be using your site for reference with the knife that I am working on. Here she is, 5/32" thick 1095 with a 7" cutting edge and 12" overall. It should be a sweet light chopper once she's finished.
