I have access to a 3/4 hp Baldor grinder 1800 rpm. 3/4" arbor

I am trying to find a 8" scotchbrite wheel 8x1x3/4" and

a siskal wheel same dimensions. and suggested 400 rouge for applying satin finish.

I have not been able to find these items, atleast not the scotchbrite in 8"

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Michael

I haven't seen a wheel like that, but the guy teaching me uses a scotchbrite pad by hand...I haven't tried that, but I am going to this weekend. David

Besides the Knife supply companies, I search Ebay. You will run into the scotchbrite wheels from 3M and other companies from time to time and usually get a much better deal.

For satin finish I will use a light scotchbrite pad from the kitchen section of most any store and finish off a satin with it. Make sure it is fine in texture.

If you have a 2x72 inch grinder you can get a scotch brite belt from any of the supply stores. I use one and it works great.

I've only seen scotch brite wheels that are 6" www.knifeandgun.com has the best price on scotch brite wheels. coarse, medium and fine. $28.00 ea. last time I got some. Kovals is where I got my 8" sisal/cloth buff. A 2x72 scotch brite belt works well also as Michael mentioned.

Michael, Do you hold the knife perpendicular to the belt like when grinding?

MSC has all the Scotchbrite wheels anyone could want. And, 1800 RPM baldor, with 3/4" arbors is very common, so you shouldn't have problems getting buffing wheels, scotchbrite wheels, etc.

There is also a thread I participated yesterday, in this forum where I listed several master lists of knifemaker supply places. Just track my posts.

treat it just like a regular belt. Grind blade edge up (i only hollow grind) and when you get the hollow the way you want it, sand the flats on a granite plate with 400 to 600 grit. always do the flats last because when you satin the hollow you might get a few small scratches on the flats.

Also, the more you use the scotch brite belt the finer the scratchs get so it might be a little course at first. you can wear it down a little on a piece of scrap before you try it on a real knife.
