i'm intrigued by sharpening with paper wheels. however, i know nothing about
what grinders are available and or recommended. can anybody offer a suggestion?

Just buy a bench grinder from you local hardware store and take off the guards. Make sure the shaft size is correct. They work good just practice on some cheap knives before using them on your good ones. Hove fun.

I had mine set up on a HF 3/4 hp grinder but moved it to a 1/2 hp slower motor on a mandril. Experience is more important than the motor

A little off topic, but be careful when appling the wax to the abrasive wheel. A little too much, and it won't cut the metal any more. I guess that means new grit has to be glued up on the wheel. Anyway, a little wax, no more.

As Knifemaker.ca said, clearance from the motor housing is a factor. Use 8" wheels on 6" machines & 10" wheels on 8" machines. Make sure you have correct arbor hole size.

Consider a buffer, rather than a bench grinder. Wider throw & no need to remove guards. Harbor Freight & Sears carry 6" buffers.

If you use too much wax on gritted wheel, just work on something heavier, like a kindling ax, & work the wax off. You cannot glue new grit on the old. You have to follow the instructions & take all the old grit, wax & glue off, down to bare paper.

Though the paper wheels will work at slower speeds, they are most efficient at 3,000 or better RPMs.
