Before you get all excited, no this isn't my new KMG. However, because I DO have a new KMG, I no longer have space in my shoebox sized shop for my Craftsman grinder, so it's for sale.

Here's the deal; Up for sale is a Craftsman 2"x42" belt/ 8" disk combination grinder. It is the older, beefier 3 wheel design (orig. $200.00) , NOT the current cheesier 2 wheel 2/3hp model. This grinder has mostly cast iron parts and is powered by a 1hp motor and set up for 110V single phase operation (plug in anywhere). It has a flat platen, belt tracking adjustment and adjustable angle on the work rest for the belt side and also has an adjustable work rest angle on the 8" disk side.

The grinder served me well to get me started in blade grinding and some guys still make some real nice knives on a similar machine. It is used, but in overall good condition. There is only one modification that has been made to the grinder. The bolt that secures the belt side work rest eventually stripped out as it needs to be unbolted and the work rest removed every time you want to change the belt as configured from the factory. I drilled the hole oversize and tapped the hole for an oversize 1/2-13 bolt that is more secure than the stock configuration. While the work rest is stock, if the buyer wants, I will mill off the far right side of the work rest that wraps around the belt to allow quick belt changes like my new KMG has. I will do this at no charge and this mod would allow belt changes without dismounting the work rest. There are shop vac compatible dust collector ports on both the belt and disk side.

I have even seen at least one guy find the right form factor DC motor and convert one of these to DC variable speed.

This grinder a great deal for a newbie maker as there is a reasonable assortment of abrasive belts available in this belt size from TruGrit. Many affordable belt grinders are limited to belts available from Sears or Harbor Freight that suck.

Speaking of belts and TruGrit, included in this sale are the following new/unused belts:

4 Ceramic Alumina 60 grit

7 Ceramic Alumina 120 grit

14 Klingspor Aluminum Oxide 220 grit

7 Klingspor Aluminum Oxide 400 grit

There's also a half dozen lightly used belts (I threw away any questionable ones).

The new belts alone would cost around the asking price of $150.00 for the whole package including the grinder itself. There's also a couple extra Craftsman 8" PSA disks included.

Local pick up only as I don't want to deal with shipping.

Feel free to email or PM me with questions.

ummm, I don't think this is the place to sell equipment. It will probably be moved.

It sounds great. Are you sure you won't ship it? I have an address in NY you could use?

John,
That's a nice machine; you might miss having that disk around.
Regards,
Greg

Yeah, are you sure you don't wanna ship[ it? And how close are you to Bueana Park, Up by LA? Sorry not real familiar with Cali. If your close, (and my wife doesn't shoot me for asking) I've got a place there that'll ship it for me.

Buena Park is about an hour's drive south of here if traffic is light. It's heavy, bulky and oddly shaped. All the stuff you don't want in an object to ship.

John,

You might want to reconsider getting rid of this grinder.......

Quite a few years ago I bought the exact same grinder. It really didn't do what I wanted so I built my own 2 X 72 grinder and didn't use the old Craftsman much at all.
I actually tried to sell it but couldn't find any one interested in it. So it sat in my shop for several years with very little use.

I have since seperated the two grinders, powered them with DC motors. On the 2 X 42 I installed an extension arm with the small wheel adapter from my KMG and now have a dedicated small wheel grinder.
Both of these grinders have variable speed control and the disc also reverses.
EXTREMELY handy to have around and the conversion was essentially a no brainer---very easy.

Just my .02

Mike, you've only given me good advice so far (thanks bro). This might be sage wisdom. I have looked at several different mods to make it more useful and have also looked at variable DC drives for it. It's a good base machine that is crying out for tweaking into something really cool and has tons of potential.

Unfortunately, I only have a 13'x14' shop built out in my garage and am pretty well out of room. I'll do a shop tour photo post soon so you can see how tight it is. I've arranged it to be safe to work in and productive, but there's really no more room for extra machines. I've reserved space for the incoming disk grinder, but that's about al that will fit.

Besides, I thought at a deal like this with all the belts, it might help a newer newbie than I get started making knives, and that's worth something to me.

John,

I do understand about the space issue. It wasn't but just a couple of years ago that my shop was no bigger than what you have. If you get things too crowded it can become a dangerous place!
The thought of helping a newbie is very commendable. Good on ya!

But still.........not haveing a disk grinder? Why, that's almost as bad as not have a belt grinder to begin with.

Mike

Mike,

You must have missed the post above about the incoming Hardcore disk I've got a line on. It's made by the same folks as the belt grinder Mayo and a bunch of others use.

You advice is sound though and if I can't find a local newbie who wants it, it can just sit on a shelf in the corner until I come up with a need for it.

A tight shop can be dangerous. I've worked pretty hard to lay things out so that I can comfortably and safely work on all my machines. I'll be doing a shop tour post soon so you can see how it's all laid out.

Thanks for the concern and advice.

John,

Yep, you're right. I missed that post. Me bad! :footinmou

That Hardcore disc grinder is the cadilac of disc grinders---just none better. If I had one of those I'd retire my Craftsman in a heart beat! I think I'm gonna call Tru-Grit...........

Mike

Well, I'm not exactly getting the best model. I'm supposed to get teh fixed speed (1140RPM) version as the maker has upgraded to the variable speed model. Now that's top end!
