Hi everyone. It's been ages since I started a thread here. Im ready to purchase my first grinder and would love some input from anyone and all that would like to contribute. For quite some time I've really liked the KMG and all the various options available but there is also the Bader which also has quite an assortment of goodies. Are their any down sides to the KMG? Pros and cons on either would be greatly appreciated.

Very similar machines. I built a KMG clone and love it. The goodies available are great and numerous. You can also build your own for special projects if necessary. I think the KMG accessories are a little cheaper than bader and Rob is great to deal with. Whichever you choose, KMG or Bader will serve you well.

I learned on a Bader. they are serious industrial tools, damn near bulletproof and rock solid, especially the BIII, the KMG is kind of a lightweight construction by comparison, that said, both machines are extremely versatile, and the KMG is built specifically for knifemakers, and everyone who owns one swears by it. I am building a KMG clone with Rob Frink drive and tracking wheels and a Bader platen assembly. When I have the money I will be getting a variable speed BIII, in the meantime the clone will take over from the Kalamazoo I have been using since 1989

I've never used anything other than my KMG, so this is a bit one-sided I guess. Anyway, I'd buy a 2nd one in a heartbeat. As was already said, Rob is a great PR person that really looks after his clients, and helps those even if they aren't purchasing his grinder, and to me that's pretty neat. Now he isn't as big as some of the other companies, but that's what I like about him and the KMG. I can speak directly with the designer/builder of the machine almost anytime I need to. Also I like the idea of helping out an individual business man like Rob, after all, that's what I am. You sure couldn't compare my knives to Buck, I think you can sorta see my point.
So, I'd suggest the KMG, with all the goodies you can afford to go with it, or build your own goodies. I'm sure the resale value is great to.

The KMG is great for sure. Also check out Travis Weurtz new grinder. A bit more $ but worth it if you can swing it. If not, go with the KMG.

Wow thanks guys for all the wonderfull input. Travis's grinder just through another variable into the equation lol. Ill be sure to post pics and let you guys know what I decide on. Thanks again.

I have a Bader III , if and when I get another grinder , it will be a KMG.

KMG after the sale support is superior from I hear.

I have only used my Bader B111, and I love it, the only down side to it, that I can think of is the platen on the combination arm, I had to make a new one, that had nice radius edges on it to grind in the plunge lines, and the original was not flat. Other than that it is all the grinder I could ever want. I am sure the KMG is a great grinder also, I hear nothing but praise for them, I bet you will be happy with either one.
