Being very very new to blade grinding ( read that as I've yet to really do it properly). I'm wondering if there is somewhere that I can see exactly how to go about it. I'm particularly interested in how you do the ricasso area. Is there a web site that does the step by step, or a book? As always , I'm relying on this group to steer me in the right direction.

Thanks

allen blade has some good videos
on hollow grinding one on flat grinding
and one on sheath making they are 13 dollars or all three for 48 dollars
his email is allenblade@msn.com
email him he will give you his address
etc.

DO NOT PASS GO, DO NOT THINK, DO NOT EVEN BREATHE!!! Go get the $$$, stuff it in an envelope and get Allen Blade's videos!!!! I am new to grinding too so I recently (1 week ago) got his flat grinding and kydex sheath making videos in the mail. They are awesome. On the flat grinding video you see an entire blade ground out and made ready for heat treatment and Allen explains everything that he is doing. I know know that you can't take full passes (one of my big mistakes), I now know why I was getting the tips of my blades way too thin before my grind was done, etc. Well worth the money, and I had to get my Canadian pesos converted into good American dollars too! All the canucks here understand- we all cringe taking a wheelbarrow full of loonies to the post office to order things in

(this is a joke, by the way, but the exchange rate is bad for us who order things in) Oh geez, this is getting long winded. What I am trying to say is that those videos are well worth your hard earned money. Oh, and tell Allen that I sent ya. I figure that if I send him enough people I may get the next video free, or maybe even a MEUK!!!

I highly recommend you spend some time looking at some very well ground blades as you get started with your grinder....look at them for a long time, and often...get it into your mind what you want to end up with. i think this will help a lot.

Allens videos are good, as is Hrisoulas video on pattern welding. It's worth the $20.00 just to see him grind, even if you don't forge or do damascus, it's good to know more about the process.

I read it back on a post that is what
you can get all three of them for that
price,i am far from a used car sells man
but that was a good one rob

You forgot the $3 per video for shipping and handling.
BTW, I have the flat grinding video and highly recommend it.
In addition, you should buy the book "How to Make Knives" by Loveless and Barney. It will take you through the entire process and describes several different methods.

If at all possible, find a knifemaker close by. They are a world of information. I have been making blades for only 5 or 6 years and I have been visiting a mastersmith for the past month or so. (The forging disease is terminal, I'm afraid). I have learned immensely just by visiting.

This forum is a good source of information as well. You can learn an awful lot from this place. Collectively, you are on the best forum for information in a very constructive way. Don't hesitate to ask.

Good books? The Loveless and Barney book is good. The Complete Bladesmith by Jim Hrisoulas. The David Boye book is pretty good.

I am positively possessed when it comes to getting information on a subject that interests me. I've procrastinated for about 30 years before finally saying the heck with it. I'm making knives! I'm very fortunate that I own a machine shop, so I ahve at my disposal, virtually every machine necessary to create things out of metal. I figured that wiht my experience, I'd be doing the walk in the park, heck, it's only a shape in metal! Well BIG surprise, an entire new set of movements, procedures and with all the machines at my disposal, I STILL don't have everythign that I need! You're right about this forum. I've learned more in the 10 posts that I've made here in the last couple of weeks than I have in a year of foundering around on my own, ( And I'm a REALLY GOOD researcher!)

Jim,
I am not sure where Levittown is, but George Tichbourne lives in Ont. Canada and has been a wealth of infomation and a very nice guy. I live near Niagara Falls, NY and make the drive every so often. There is a knife show October 15th (I think) that alot of canadian knifemaking guild members will attend. If I am still around, we can carpool up if you are intrested.

Regards,
Glenn
