Thinking of holiday gift for myself and was wondering what people use more.... a grinder or a sander? I have been looking at that sander at TX that has a base and platteu with some pulleys. There is also a website I found to construct one. My first impression is that a sander is more versatle, but I'm not sure.... can you get higher grits on wheels? Would a grinder be more hazardous to use?

Howdy There...!
For my two cents worth, they are both dangerous. I personally have two 2x72 belt grinders, that I would get rid of for anything. You can do alot with a contact wheel and platen. I bought a bench grinder when I first started learning and I made a few blades with, but I suggest get a belt grinder. Good Luck...!

i think possum was saying he would not get rid of his 2x72 belt grinders. i do every thing from rough to fine with the right belt on my 2x72. the thing is that the smaller belt machines dont have as good a variaty of belts available. get a 2x48 at least. or best, is only cry once and get a decent 2x72

I started out with what I call a entry level grinder (Grizzly) and had alot of fun making knives with it. Just recently I up graded to what I would call a top of the line grinder. The new grinder is built better and runs much smoother. I have much more control grinding with the new grinder.

I would get a belt grinder instead of a grinder that uses wheels. That is because it is much easier to change belts than to dress grinding wheels. When you are looking at tools for your shop consider the ones that will help you with making a better knife. The belt grinder is one of the most important tools for your shop in that it will save you time over having to use a file for shaping the knife. Good luck.
