Hi everyone. I am very new to knife making and am trying to get as much info as possible. My basic question is......What direction does a knife grinder belt turn? Does it go from top to bottom or bottom to top? Also does it vary from machine to machine for example Wilton or Bader or Burr King or KMG just to mention a few? Any information would be greatly appreciated and also what do you guys feel is a good machine to get started with and grow with. I dont mind spending the money on a machine that is of quality and can be modified to grow with skills and needs. Thanks to all who reply.

Hello...

I built my own, similiar to the KMG... if you want a variable speed motor.... check mine out... it is a 3hp 3phase... the variable speed controller is also a converter... from a 220V single phase in and 220V 3 phase out to the motor... NICE>... you can make knives from a 1X42 belt sander, autobody disc grinder, 6X48 belt sander, 2x48, .... and so on.... I started with hand files....

on my site I have sketches of the two I made. If you want to make your own let me know and I will tell you how I did it... get the plans from my site. I like the design of mine and If I were to buy one... I would get the KMG. I use Rob's rotary platen, flat platen, and small wheel attachment... Have fun on your journey....

look at my shop too.... amazing what you can scrounge and use... a bit messy though.....

Every grinder I know of goes from "top to bottom"; i.e., turns toward you. I'd hate to have one turn the other way because it would throw all the grit up into your face.

I have a Hardcore grinder and it's an incredible machine, but very pricey. Lots of guys here have KMGs, and I've never heard a bad word about them from anyone. You do have to provide your own motor, but even then you'll probably spend about a third of the price of the Hardcore.

Grinders and buffers in the blade shop should run top to bottom. The only exception is flat sanders like 6" table models, they run with the belt going away from you.The best way to think of this is - "Where will the grit (and the blade if it snags) go!"

I noticed the plans for your two grinders don't seem to be up on your site. Any chance I'm missing them, or are the links down now? Look familiar but I'd like to take a look.

Nice lloking shop by the way, man I'm jealous of those power hammers:D

Thanks a head of time

Jon
