New here. Let me know if this is right board for this question please.

If a 48" belt grinder is modified to fit a 72" belt would that in effect half the rpm? The grinder now is about 4400fpm and I want to slow it down.

The speed of the belt (in suface feet per minute) is determined by the speed (RPM) and diameter of the drive pulley. The length of the belt does not affect the speed. To reduce the speed of the belt, either reduce the diameter of the drive pulley or reduce the RPM of the drive pulley.

You might also put a manual rheostat on the switch to slow it down.--KV
