Hi all. I am new to this forum as well as to knife making. Having no related skills, of course I have too many questions. I have spent several days reading old posts, FAQ’s, etc.. Yesterday I started reading about equipment, grinding, heat treatments etc. Then I stumbled across the “WTF” thread, and my knife making education was put temporarily on hold. For the rest of the day I concentrated on reading the 50-60 pages contained within. Well err, ok, would you believe looking at the pictures? Nice thread I might add !!

Anyway, I am in the process of setting up a small work shop where I hope to manage a few decent knives for family and friends. I have been reading about grinders as I think that will be my first major purchase. I have narrowed it down to three, the Bader III, KMG, Wuertz TW-90. I had nearly decided on the KMG until I saw the TW-90(even though I did read about the cons ie; smaller and aluminum arms, etc.).

My question is if money were no object(hypothetically), which would you choose and why ? What makes one of these better than the rest ? Is a horizontal grinder a must have ? Does it have more to do with the type of knives you make or does one of these machines just hands down outperform the others ?? I hope to hear from makers whom have experienced all three. If this has been addressed, please feel free to direct me to the appropriate links, as I have not found it.

Thank you for your time.

You may have to change your question a bit. I don't know if you will find anyone who has used the three .
Welcome here. Frank

No problem to modify the question or give please feel free to give a modified answer.

Perhaps I should say, a hobbyist such as myself who will likely never own but one grinder and if money were no object(again hypothetically), what would that one grinder be and why ??

Also, just how important is a horizontal grinder ?

Thanks.
