Roy, mount it where you are comfortable with it, if you feel yourself bending, or reaching , chnage it where it is comfortble.
For the speed control get a set of step, or cone pulleys, one on the motor and one on the shaft, one pulley should be inverted so you get different speeds.

Check out the Audell's book on electricity, motors from your local library, for more info.

Roy-

Back when I was having real trouble finding the right heighth for me, I decided to make a repositionable set-up to decide just what was right.

I just screwed together a big T bracket out of plywood (of course you have to reinforce it with brackets, but the main shape is a big T).

I bolted the grinder to the top "shelf" of the T, and then used Quick clamps to hold the "column" of the T to the end of my bench.

This way you can set it at one height and have it stable. If you don't like it, all you do is loosen the clamps and lower the grinder, or vice versa. Once I figured out where it worked for me, I made my new bench at that height.

I had a HUGE amount of trouble grinding until I found the right height. Now that I have grinding down, it's not a real big deal, but it sure was when I was learning.

I have my grinder set up so that the center of the wheel is 43.25" off the floor of the shop. That just happens to be VERY close to the heighth of my belly button.

I also keep my elbows close. Because of the way that I'm built, I can't dig my elbows into my sides, it would be too awkard. But I do keep my elbows close at my sides.

Good luck,
Nick
