Over the past several years i have grown increasingly intriegued with blades. Now that i am in college, i have the time to devote more attention to them. I would like to start making full-tang knives, but i am lost in the sea of grinders, etc. Yet, i find myself starving for materials. Where is a good place to get my hands on some decent materials and tools without having to compromise my tuition funds? i have already recieved the Texas Knifemaker's Supply Catalog, but i would much rather buy the individual blanks, scales, pins, guards, etc. Also, i have, just this afternoon, recieved the Tru Grit package for the Industrial Suplies (WHEW!!!), i am COMPLETELY lost there, how do i find prices, supliers, used equipment (?)... just something to get me started. I don't have a place where i can really "set-up-shop" here on campus, other than my bedroom which is about 15' x 12'. So i would need something either portable, or compact.

Any information would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

If you don't mind e-mailing me, my address is: GaHunter85@hotmail.com (yes, i know we're not suposed to have Hotmail addresses, but this is the one that comes directly to me)

Thank All of You!!!

It sounds like you're in the hacksaw, file, and sandpaper group. You can make knives this way. It will make you appreciate power tools a lot more when you can get some.
Get a book on knife making that fits your style or scenario and read, read, and read.

For steel, I just went to a local spring shop (they make truck springs) and bought flat 5160. They cut it to the lengths I wanted, and I paid $3.00/pound.

I am just starting in on this adventure myself, but as stated above, hacksaws, files and sandpaper don't take up too much space.

BTW, this place is a GREAT resource. I have been lurking here for months, and have learned alot.

Call up Pops Knife Supplies here in GA, out near Augusta in Wilkes County.
He's got cheap 0-1 steel for $20 for a 1.5" x 36" piece. Not bad. Many others want $25.
There MIGHT be someplace cheaper, but not sure.
He is great to deal with, and your order comes the day after he ships...

Mathew, A suggestion here. Shorten your location in your profile as it makes it extremely aggravating to attempt to read your posts, as you have to scroll all the way off the page to the right because of your extremely long location line.
