Grinding after heat treating?

I was wondering if anyone here grinds their stainless blades after getting them back from heat treating? I was thinking about profiling the blade then sending it off for heat treat. Does this work ok??

shawn, yes you can profile your blade then send it for heat treat, Just make sure to drill your holes for pins first, saves a lot of hassel...

Shawn,
Correct me if I am wrong but I am assuming that you mean grind the bevels after heat treating the blade.

It would be best to grind the bevels before heat treating is done. This will save you lots of time and belts (especially on the more exotic stainless steels).

You can do what is called a regrind after the blade is heat treated. This regrinding should be done with great care since it will be easy to build up too much heat in the steel that will affect the hardness of the material. I do regrinds quite often since I tend to go thin on some of the bevels. I can leave the edges a little thick to help keep the blades from warping during the heat treat process (happens with thinly ground stainless).

Barry,

That is what I meant. I thought it might do away with blade warpage during heat treating but it doesn't sound like it's worth the trouble. I also wondered about it being hard on belts like you mentioned. They don't last long enough as it is. Thanks for the input.

I have ask the same question on this board. alot of folder makers
do this.I think it is a good idea also one thing I think that will help
as far as belts go.I think the key to grinding heat treated steel
is the hardness of the wheel A harder wheel grinds faster.I plan on doing some to see how it worksout, a plus to this is when you grind
you don't not have to go back and regrind after heat treat.
