Grinding Damasteel

I had the opportunity of grinding my first Damasteel blade this weekend, a full size bowie. This stuff is nice to grind and finish, a lot better than 440C or ATS 34. I guess that the two components reduce work hardening tendancy that the other two have.

I tell you though that the first time you cut into a $200 plus piece of steel it gives you a bit of a thrill.

George: i have done quit a few blades in Damasteel and like you I found it much easyer to grind. But I dont think its just the two components. Damasteel is made of RWL-34 and PMC-27. RWL is like ATS-34 just powder version and PMC is like 12C27 also just powder version.

The PMC is softer to work than RWL so thats one of the things. But RWL is also softer than ATS-34 so my guess is its the powderconstruction and PMC that make is so nice to grind!

I look forward to seeing the knife! Good luck.

You are probably right about the powder metalurgy being the key factor here but I think that the 100% hardenable material in the 440C is beginning to harden with grinding heat as well.

Got the blade back from heat treat today so tomorrow will begin to show what the metal will finish like.

Hi George!
I made a few Damasteel knives when they had that "introductory" offer. I WILL buy more. It IS nice to work with and looks great when finished. Talonite also gives the BIG $$$$$ rush when you grind it
