Hello everyone, this is my first post on BF.
I just wanted to see if anyone could help me with a problem i was having. I just got a new Native 5 today and ive had it for a few hours and was playing with it and trying to work it in. It was a bit stiff and wouldnt drop when the lock was depressed like everyone said it would. However i didnt mind and figured it would break in with time. let me stress that this was not a problem anywhere near similar to what happened next. they are COMPLETELY unrelated and this initial stiffness is absolutely normal.

But then i thought maybe adding a bit of lube would fix it faster so i tried that..... and then all heck broke loose. i was opening and closing it trying to work the lube into the lock and pivot, but it suddenly just seized up and started feeling like it was grinding on the lockbar. It was ridiculously tight and the only thing that could have made a difference was the oil I used.
But does that make any sense? Adding lube shouldnt make anything worse. it was like i had put a layer of sandpaper on the part of the lock that touches the tang.

I KNOW it has something to do with the oil, because it happened about 3 sec after i sprayed it in the pivot. Maybe it washed out the factory lube? Or dissolved it? LOL
But I just used silicon oil, not WD40!

Please help!

And i know its something to do with friction on the lockbar and tang because if you open it normally, it grinds like crazy, but if you do it while mashing the button in as far as it will go to disengage the lock completely, it wont be as grindy (if that makes sense)

Rinse it out with hot soapy water and see if that helps

Had same problem, lift up the lock bar and put a drop of oil underneath it

I tried and its better but only slightly. Any ideas? Should i replace the lube that was washed out with some new oil or grease or something? Different than the first oil obviously, but something?
I really dont want to have to send it to spyderco.

Sounds like there was some kind of grit inside the knife to begin with. When you added oil that likely floated the grit to the lock interface where it is now stuck.
As Rycen said, give it a hot bath and work it open and closed underneath the water. Dry it completely and relube and you should be good to go.

Ok I think i fixed it, I put a bit of white lithium grease in the pivot and worked it into the lock and it immediately made it better. Thanks for the help!

My native 5 is really tight too. I'm not really used to it quite yet. Flickable, but not smooth feeling like any of my other knifes. Almost impossible to middle finger flick.
