Started grinding the main bevel on my knife, im finding a flat spot on the tip, as if the tip was broken off flat.

what am i doing wrong?

thanks

Probable cause is moving the tang towards you as you come off the belt. Instead of the blade running straight across, it forces the tip against the belt at a higher angle and grinds off the tip.

trying to concentrate on holding it straight. doesnt seem to be helping. i do notice the whole blade moves closer to the belt as i get to the tip.

This isn't easy to do any more than grinding the bevel - well maybe can be helpful. First I hope you are using mild steel so you can save on some buck which is common to wreck; and two draw two lines for the edge thickness and while drawing the blade along try to look down at that guild line. If you can do this the tip too will grind out as it should.
A lot of practice is what it takes for most of us to grind bevels, and I do mean a lot. As you go along you will learn to correct your errors on your own. Try 15 or 20 mild steel blades and see what is happening. If they look good change to some knife steel ; if not continue learning with the mild steel. Some members starting out will start with wood like hardwood paint sticks. Frank

I'm sure you already know, but a lot of guys that sharpen on a belt pull the tip all the way across the belt. Only go halfway across.

One thing I've seen people do is to leave a bit of material at the tip for the very end.

As for fixing a tip, you can drop the spine a tad.

Maybe that's what I did wrong. I was taking the tip all the way across. Iv been trying to stop when the tip is half way across. Though as it is now the belt is not grinding on the tip. Not sure how to fix it. Going half way across will it fix itself?

You may find it helpful to grind from the tip to the ricasso, that way you can't let the belt roll around the tip like that.

Well. i'm done grinding. I just kept going and avoiding the tip. at first it was leaving the tip very thick, eventually i guess i got the habit of only grinding a little bit near the tip. when i was done I fixed the tip free hand.

tho, i may have let it get a bit to "sharp" before hardening. shrugs.
