What are your opinions on grinding strokes circular or back and forth?I've done both through the years and sometimes I feel back and forth is faster but that may just be differences in blade steel. What do you think is more efficient?

Grinding back and forth without lifting the blade is far more efficient. Plus you get the added benefit of holding a better angle a more consistent angle. The circular style or carpenters grind, my Grandfather taught me and I've not used it much. DM

Murray Carter says in his video it does not matter in doing the relief grind. He goes back and forth on his stones.
When he does the cutting edge, he goes backwards (edge trailing).

Agree, back/forth or circular scrubbing is much faster in metal removal; I also feel it makes it easier to feel flush bevel contact, and therefore makes holding the angle easier. Circular is especially useful on small stones, as with pocket-sized hones (it's how I use my DMT 'credit cards' and Fallkniven DC4). For finishing strokes on stones, after the initial grinding, I like light edge-leading passes to orient the grind lines correctly at the edge, and for cleaning up most of the burrs formed.

Thank You guys for the added input.Yes I was asking for for relief grinding specifically.I do edge leading for finishing the edge on finer abrasives.
