Anyone out there use a jig for flat grinding? If so, would you mind sharing your jig in pictures or describing how it works? Just trying to collect ideas on this. I have seen a good flat grind jig for small knife blades, I'd like to hear from you who may have used them on larger blades.

I know there is something to be said for free-hand grinding and I know some people look down on grinding jigs but the way I see it is if you made it and you're happy with it, what difference does it make whether you used a jig or not?

Thanks,

Actually, one thing that may help is a file guide of sorts clamped at the plunge. This will keep your plunge even on both sides if you want to try something like that.

I started out grinding with a jig of my own design. It workrd like a pendilum. The knife blank clamped in and was swung across the belt. A friend borrowed it one day and never brought it back. It was either grind free hand or make another one. I would rather make knives than tools so I tried it freehand. That was years ago, I will never go back . God gave us the most advanced jig.....our own hands and eye. I do clamp a guide for the plunge areas.

Take the money you would spend on fabricating or buying a jig, and buy a LOT of steel!!! Learn to grind by hand... You will have much more freedom, and you will make better knives... Jigs wont ever replace practice, and wont ever do a better job...
