I have been reading about the old cutlers Sheffield and Solingen they used to grind lieing prone with the wheel grinding away from them.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the running the wheel away, in the mannner?
I probably won't lie down to grind (don't think my back would take it) but I'd like some opinions before I give into this urge to turn my grinder on it's side.

Life is what it is

They actually layed on their stomachs and lots of em took their dogs to work with them during the winter and had them lay on the back of their legs to help keep them warm. I used to have an old magazine that had photographs of it. Sure looked like some hard work!

Take care!! Michael

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms!!!

Can somebody point me in the direction of a picture of this grinding?!?! That sounds really out there, I had heard something like this before but disreguarded it as crap.

Huh, I guess the guy was telling the truth.

I am very curious now as to how this operation looks.

Thanks
Nick

Knifemakers of old San Fransico had a pic I think. Bernard Levine might have a pic.
The picture in the San Fransico book by Bernard Levine, that stands out in my mind was the dog powered grinding wheel, yep just like a squirrell cage only dog sized.

The old grinders used to lie on a board over the 6' or so wheels they used with whatever type of padding they provided themselves.
