My grinds from the ricasso are different on each side. One side is nice and rounded in and the other side goes straight up. I grind with the edge up. I've ground about 15 blades and this is the first time I've had this problem.

Dan,

Check the radius on the edges of your platen (flat grinding) or wheel (hollow grinding). If everything is the same as before, perhaps you didn't run your belt over the edge enough or break the edge of the belt in.

Here is a good tip given by Rodger Green at the latest Johnny Stout hammer in rescently.

Flip your belt over, so that the left edge is now on the right and vice versa. Belts get duller on one side and this helps even things out.

I had the same problem with my Bader. The flat platen they send from the factory is just a piece of angle iron, which is neither flat nor even on the ends. One side is ground flat, and the other side is rounded off. I ended up taking a piece of D2, having it heat treated and surface ground flat, and mounting this D2 piece in front of the iron piece with machine screws. Made a heck of a lot of difference! Now, I dont have any excuses. But, also adjusting the tracking of your belt so that it sticks out a little, makes it easier to get in closer and make things even.

Kaos, I never break the edge of the belt in (BUT)I did do some practice grinding on a mild steel blade and only ground one side of the blade. This probably broke the one edge in and not the other.

On my stiffer belts like my 60 grit I let the edge overlap the end of the wheel by about an 1/8 inch on each side. I use a 1/2 round rod an break the bead on each side. That allows the belt to bend aroung the edge of the rubber contact wheel. I am also assuming you rounded the edge of the wheel a little. If you didnt you can run the belt off each side and use a file or sand paper on the other side to slightly round off the edge of the rubber wheel. This gives a rounded line to the blade grind if thats what you are looking for. I have ground about 40 blades so far and it's starting to get easier and they are looking better. Practice is the key and I also recommend going slow if you have the choice. Best of luck!

I use the platten and hollow grind. I prefer hollow grinding. The 1/2 inch rod is used while it's running and on the rubber wheel. I am currently using an 8 inch wheel. I use it to roll the belt over the edge to round it off and smooth the ends off so it doesnt dig in to much. Makes a nice smooth curve for the grind line. Also helps to eliminate the 2 inch grind line on the blades!

As for the platten I guess if the sides are uneven it would be operator related and time and more grinding will help that.
