disclaimer: I know G10 dust is nasty and breathing protection is warranted, so we can dispense with those warnings. Thanks.

I want to thin the scales on a SAR5. When I was hand-sanding the spine, I noticed that the paper seemed to load/clog up on the slab material. How do you take down the scales without clogging up the sandpaper? If I use my HF 1x30 belt grinder, will the problem be even worse? or should I use really coarse grit? how about drywall sanding screens, would that work?

try some 60 grit sandpaper. That should remove material quite fast. I usually rough profile with a 36grit belt before hand finishing.

Hey, be sure and use a breathing mask !

That stuff is nasty !

:D

LMAO! I had at least three people in mind that would do that, and yes you were one of them! :D :p

I was one of the three....... :o

I also use a 36 grit on a belt sander to take it down to near finished size as well, but you could definitely use a 60 or 80 to make sure you don't take off too much. Use one of those belt cleaning rubber sticks to keep your belt clean. I then hand sand with 120 then 220 and then wet sand at 400. If you want to save on sand paper you can rub the paper on that same rubber stick in between but I tend to not think it's worth it.

Be sure to look at the G10 really good in tangential lining as it's easy to miss scratches..also when you wet sand or get it wet at all it will make those scratches somewhat disappear so you will need to look at it really good under a light to make sure they really are gone and not just filled with fluid.

After hand sanding I like to give it a good rubdown with WD-40.

get some good wet/dray paper, and a large plastic tub...
hold your project under water and have at it...

or- belt sander and constant water spray.. but could get shocking (electricity)...
