Grinding Sparks

I generated some sparks while repairing my GRS. The sparks were yellow and streaked about a foot. My literature is rather vague, it saids that steels with 0.6-1.7 % carbon will generate this type of spark. 5160 would fall into this catagory. Anymore information on spark testing?

Will I "think" Cobalt throws a short dark orange, star like spark.

If you had of had a super dooper heavy duty motor and the ability to really hog material off the sparks may have streaked up to 3 feet!!!!!!;)

The ability or characteristics of some alloying elements to make "stars" is also a factor in determineing what the make up of the steel is as well as the color of the star like sparks
themself.
A piece of 1018, a mild low carbon steel, throws a lot of yellow sparks, but nary a star.
I never did know as much about this subject as I would have liked and I've forgoten most of what I did know.:(
Some of the guys in the Shoptalk Forum are fairly knowledgeable about this though.
That's where I got the info about the Cobalt and why I said IIRC and

And speaking of Cobalt.... Has anyone seen Cobalt around or talked with him in a while?
Cobalt used to be a real regular here and I know others besides myself miss his humor as well as excellent input.
He could join us in the battle between HIKV and "Research and would really give Tsimi a run for his money!!!!":D

Bro didn't you and Cobalt used to stay in touch pretty often?
Have you heard from him at all?
And Cobalt would have also been caught up in all this mess wouldn't he?
 
Last I heard from Cobalt he said he was on the move and asked me to send his AK Bowie to his mother. I sent the knife but never heard from him again.
