Grinding Stick Tangs

I have only make full tang and a few rabbit tang blades in the past. I want to try a couple of stick tang knives.

Should I grind out the entire stick tang, and them thread the end? (any tricks to doing it this way?)

Or - should I gring just the blade and a partial small tang and then weld on a piece of allthread?

What works out best? I am a little concerned about the weld and allthread being weak.

All comments appreciated.

I leave the tang 1/2" wide from the hilt back. Then I take about 1 to 1 1/2" down to the diameter of the thickness of the steel and thread it.

I weld a piece of stainless allthread to a stub tang.

Threading a full tang works just fine but seems a little brittle and using the allthread saves you a great deal of cutting.

agree with the above...threading the end of the tang is a pain in the butt.....welding on a piece is duck soup....and you never have to worry about the tang being to short or too long....i usually drill three holes in a row in the stub tang...send it to paul bos for heat treatment....then when it gets back run an abrasive disc into the tang to the bottom of the third hole....make it snug fit for the threaded rod so you can tap it in with a hammer and not hafta worry about it falling out why youre welding it. i bought a small wire feed welder just for this purpose.

Hmmmmmmm!! I've seen this method in some of my books, and did it once, but I didn't think it would be as strong as one piece of steel. I'll give it a try. It would save some steel too. Thanks Nick and Tom!!
