So in my quest for a better shop layout I am thinking about building a little grinding room inside my two car garage. I wanted to get input from the experts before I embark on the endeavor.
Do you have a dirty grinding room in your shop?
Pros?
Cons?

Thanks!

I built a cheap grinding room using 1/2" osb for the walls, and 2x4s on the floor and ceiling with a channel cut in them for the panels to slide into. Used 1x lumber to cover/fasten the joints between panels, and used a hollow core door with foam weatherstripping. Caulked all the seams. It's not entirely sealed from the rest of the garage, but it does contain the grinding mess, and most importantly it drastically improves the air quality in the rest of the shop.

It will keep rest of your shop cleaner which would be nessesary if you have mills or lathes there. At the same time it means you yourself will be contained in a room with a higher dust concentrated room. In my garage the lathe has its own smaller room and the grinding is doneon a waaay larger and open part of the garage.

Before spending any money spend a few bucks on a piece of white board and lay out your proposed grinding room. I cut out the pieces that will be in the shop so I can move them around so I can see how the layout works. I've done this twice for full size shops and it saves a lot of having to move the machinery more than once.

This^^^ I had a back room area when I was paying retail rent here in town:eek:.. I called it the dirty room. I bought a couple of those clear plastic strip curtains like they use in supermarkets to reach in for the milk etc.. it helped a lot!

I built mine with thick clear vinyl panels. I saw someone used a little plant grow tent thing. That was pretty slick.

Pros: keeps dust where ya want it. Not where ya don't. much better for your health as only one area has the fine particulate. So your not breathing in the junk when forging or doin other work. Also a lot safer if built right as your not having dust build up where ya forge, weld, etc.

Cons: it's concentrating said dust into one small area. So you need to clean it more often, and ideally have good airflow out of the shop for it otherwise it will be a very unhealthy place to be in without resp on. Depending on how big a space you have it will be cramped inside which just makes things a pain in the ass. I wouldn't build one that wasn't able to accommodate all potential needs for the tools in the room. Last con, lighting, will need added fixtures to keep it bright!

Just finishing my 9x8 grinding room so haven't been able to test it out just yet, but in theory it's going to make life a lot easier and cleaner. framed, drywalled, then lined with corrugated metal sheets around all the spark creating spots. Got the exhaust fan roughed in that will move all the super fine particles outside, just need to finish that up and get the clear pvc/vinyl strips for the doorway and it's set. Even plumbed in a water line right next to the belt grinder so i can grind wet when workin with materials i really don't want to breath in. All goes well should be done in a few weeks.
