Let's say I'm grinding two different blades: one a typical drop point/clip point type blade and the other a Wharcliffe with a straight edge. Let's say I want to do them with flat or convex grinds (because after watching Kim Breed's grinding video I think it'd be different for hollow grinding). In the picture below, would the mechanics of grinding these blades be correct? In either case, is the point to try to keep the edge about 90° to the belt? Or with the drop/clip type blade would I keep the main part of the edge 90° to the belt, like in "1" in the picture, then keep moving it straight across the belt, but roll the point in toward the belt and pull the proximal part of the blade away from the belt to grind that area?

Depends on how you want the grind to look. Get some scrap and experiment.
There isn't a right or wrong.

I agree with Kit. I can tell you that all my grinding is done horizonally, not turning the blade at all. I keep the edge horizonal, grinding from heel to point with the edge pointed away.

I agree with Kit
I grind both ways free hand
a friend of mine uses a rest and most always follows the edge profile.
I still can't see how he does recuves on a rest that way that way but it's all in the way you learned..
the more ways you can do it the more versatile you'll be
don't limit yourself

for straight across hollow grinding , I full contact from the recarso then pull off the edge of the wheel
for flat, again straight across full contact but then pull the butt out slightly for the tip.
to fallow the profile, hollowing I full contact and follow the tip off the edge of the wheel dropping the butt end down
with the profile...

you're grinding with "what will be the" edge pointed down??
I grind with the edge up for the hollow and flats and with the edge down only when putting the edge on..
if you are doing it the other way I don't see how you can see what you're doing?

of coarse I don't know what you have for a grinder either..

Thanks for the help, guys. Just trying to get an idea of what to do before I ruin too much steel! :D In the short amount of time I've been playing with my new toy convex grinding seems like the easiest to do because it's pretty forgiving. Flat is flat and hollow is hollow, but there's a lot of forgiveness in evening out a convex grind... at least on 1" wide steel. With a 1.5-2" wide bowie it's probably a different story.

Another way to grind and the way I do it most of the time unless hollow grinding is the blade vertical using the wheel and not the platen. Works great for convex grinding and almost flat grinds. Gib

Dan what I meant was I move the blade across the grinder horizonally. When I convex and flat grind the machine/belt is position at a 45 degree angle with the edge up. I'm looking at the edge as I move it across horizonally. Hollow grinding, the edge is up and away from me and I move it across the grinder horizonally. I use the KMG

OK that's it,, the 45 degree angle
mine I use at 90 deg :)

Dan, if I was grinding the way I think you thought I was doing it, I'd be calling Steve (Chiro 75) for an appointment to realign my head and neck. :D
